Is there any 3d projector that can do 1080p at 120hz?

Post by Zetsumei »

Hello, I've been looking around a bit for the new 1080p 3d projectors but like hdtvs they most likely only do 1080p at 2x24hz.

But as some of those 1080p 3d projectors have a dvi port at the back I wondered if any of them would do 1080p at 2x60hz. I tried to look around but couldn't really find info on this :(, so I wondered if you guys could help me out.

To be able to do that they would need a dual-link DVI input, but I don't know any projector that uses this kind of input. Generally they use HDMI inputs which are still limited to 720p@60Hz or 1080p@24Hz per eye. The Acer H9500BD has a DVI input, but from all the tests I've seen it's single-link only.

Sorry, not that I know of. If you want to use the projector for gaming, you might as well save some dough and go with 720P. It may be til next year (or beyond) when we will see full 1080P 3D projectors (meaning 120Hz 2D, 60Hz 3D).

I seen this projector that has dual link dvi and uses dlp link glasses. Probably cost more than i make in a year, but eh not everyone is poor. :ugeek: http://www.projectiondesign.com/products/f35-as3d" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

wow.. i was under the impression that the newer 3d projectors, like the optoma33, run at 120hz over hdmi 1.4a.

Checked the manual and found this:
1280 x 720p @ 50Hz Top-and-Bottom
1280 x 720p @ 60Hz Top-and-Bottom
1280 x 720p @ 50Hz Frame packing
1280 x 720p @ 60Hz Frame packing
1920 x 1080i @ 50 Hz Side-by-Side (Half)
1920 x 1080i @ 60 Hz Side-by-Side (Half)
1920 x 1080p @ 24 Hz Top-and-Bottom
1920 x 1080p @ 24 Hz Frame packing

Someone translate this for me.. is it really 30 hz / eye for 3d, even in 720p gaming? Or is it 60 hz / eye?

I was considering this for the ps3, but now i have 2nd thoughts..

It is 60hz per eye.

danke mtbs-guru.

do you know why gaming requires 60hz/eye.. but 1080p movie content in 3d is apparently viewable at 24hz / eye? Less panning in movies?

Well why is 60Hz needed for *2D* gaming, while *2D* movies run at 24Hz. Honestly I don't know. If I am playing a game, even at 35-45FPS it feels choppy. Now especially after getting a 120Hz monitor and playing 2D games at 120Hz, even 60Hz looks somewhat choppy. But movies at 24Hz seem OK. I've got no clue.

I think it's because it's basically not the same type of content. Games are fast-paced and often suppose a constant change of the viewpoint, which is quite nauseous when viewed at low framerates. Also games generally don't implement motion blur in a realistic way contrary to filmed scenes, which makes them look less realistic at low frame rates. Games also often need as low an input lag as possible to not put the player at a disadvantage (especially in FPS games), so high framerates are preferred.

But there are still quite a lot of games that are capped at 30Hz because of the limited resources of current consoles, so that may not be a problem there. Anyway you don't have the choice with these ones.

Considering this, most players play 3D games in 720p at 60Hz per eye, although it's sometimes still possible to play in 1080p at 30Hz. People here have compared these two modes for some games and the general consensus was that most games (especially FPS) were generally not playable at 30Hz.

I could also talk about framerate vs refresh rate which is not the same thing and has some influence over this, but that would unnecessarily complicate the matter.

Considering the 24Hz used for movies, I think it's essentially legacy in that it has been considered sufficient to have a decent perception of movement for over a century. Since it's not enough for all types of scenes, filmmakers generally avoid them or reduce their effects (less panning as you said). But recently some directors have been trying to go against this, especially Peter Jackson who is currently filming Bilbo the Hobbit at 48Hz and James Cameron who's going to film Avatar 2 at more than 24Hz. He did some internal filming tests that convinced him it was the way to go.

And finally, the reason why there is a compromise between resolution and framerate for HDMI 1.4a is simply because current HDMI transmission chips can't handle the bandwidth required for 1080p at 60Hz per eye. This will probably change in 2012 since founders have already announced more powerful chips though.

Have you perhaps got some information for me. Because I was just thinking of going with a hdtv and live with 720p 3d but if 1080p60x2 might become feasible soon enough I'd rather wait.

You can wait if you'd like, but its probably going to be a while until the new TVs, and everything else, support this standard. At the very least 3 or 4 months but it could be much longer before everything in the chain is up to date. There is not even one announced product that can support 1080P@60Hz 3D over HDMI. I bet some will be announced at CES 2012, but then how much longer until you can actually buy one...

Please talk about it. I realize 60hz is not the same as 60fps.. infact, i would say my bare minimum gaming limits are 30fps at 60hz..

Below 30fps the game is choppy..
Below 60hz the screen flickers (especially with florescent lighting).

With movies, 24hz is EQUAL to 24 film frames..

It may be on TVs for 2D movies (although I'm not sure it's always the case) but not for 3D movies, they are at 24fps but use a 120Hz refresh rate. In movie theaters 2D movies are still at 24fps but projected at 48Hz, 3D movies are 24fps and rendered at 144Hz.

Anyone know if any of the projectors out there now will even do 1080-30p in 3d? It's supposedly in the 1.4a spec, and there's no technical reason it shouldn't be possible on current hardware (It's just 60-1080p frames per second.)
XGA just isn't cutting it for me anymore on my only desktop PC.
