It seems to have gone well:

EDIT: Actually, that might have been just him trying it out. I'm not sure the show has actually taped yet.

Re: Rift on the Jimmy Fallon Show Is Confirmed
That's awesome to see ms, I know its gotten a lot of exposure already, but I'm really hoping Fallon sends the Rift soaring after tonight. I know his average demographic may not be too interested in something like this, especially with something that needs to be experienced, but I'm hoping the broadcast gets the word out even more so. My fantasy for the show was for everyone in the audience to be able to try it themselves, but obviously something of that scale probably isn't feasible for rift units available, plus time and security concerns. Really glad they got Topolsky to show it off, that man can communicate the awesomeness of the experience like none other. So excited for tonight and the aftermath!

Re: Rift on the Jimmy Fallon Show Is Confirmed
The momentum this is building has me both excited and worried. Excited because there seems to be a lot of people liking this, which means there is a greater chance of support for it... but worried that with this much attention, it will be only a few months before we get the ripoffs coming out. Also I worry that people will start spending more then a few min with it and that's when we'll get the hate coming back.
It's like the 3DS - before launch, there was almost universal praise for the 3D and how good it actually was in real life, then it launched and we got a lot of reviews saying they turn the 3D off and prefer it that way.

Re: Rift on the Jimmy Fallon Show Is Confirmed
I kind of have that fear as well, especially the part about potential knock-offs beating them to market, but I doubt it will be like the 3ds, I mean that 3d is okay for the size but quite limited and still a bit headache-inducing even with the XL. I have it and while there are certain games like Mario Land that utilize it wonderfully, I think ultimately the size limitation is what holds it back from the 3d being a focus, which is what Ninty eventually realized. For the Rift, we're talking a completely different scale of view, and sure there will be some naysayers complaining of motion sickness and headaches, but I don't think (and hope) it won't hurt them too bad.
The worst thing of course from the Fallon exposure is a lot of non-gamer/dev types thinking they're buying a complete retail product (hopefully Topolsky explains this in the broadcast) and just order one with next to no experiences to use it with. That's when the press could get a tad sour. Time will tell.

Re: Rift on the Jimmy Fallon Show Is Confirmed
I have the 3DS too (non-XL one), and absolutely love it. I always play it with the 3D slider all the way up, even for those games where the depth is nowhere near what it should be (almost all of the non first party titles). My point is the general population. 3D can be one of those things that is fantastic for pretty much everyone for the first 15-20 min, but it seems that a lot of the population start turning off it if longer then this.
You're right, time will tell.

It is the physiology and psychology of the 'threshold' for immersion. That is the line that is being crossed over, which is why it is praise, and why it is so universal.

Re: Rift on the Jimmy Fallon Show Is Confirmed
Its a Tomytronic 3D, its a simple but very cool game from the early 80s, I don't have the one in my pic but a different colour one that has a different game on it, it was called Sky Attack, its kinda of a Tron style game, but it does have a 3D effect to it.SartreFan wrote:@DannyO

Whats interesting about it is its design, it uses the same style of SBS to get its 3D effect.

I remember a few years ago thinking of a similar design to how Palmer has made the display work in the Rift, I was playing with trying to mount a cell phone close to my eyes and if there was a way to use optics to be able to view it, whats funny is I even saved a pair of my old previous snowboard goggles that I had damaged the lense on, thought there may be a way to make it work, but didn't think much of it past that. So it was awesome to first hear of the Rift and that someone figured out a very good way to make it work.

The opening monologue still needs work. They seem to have shortened it which makes room for other things that Jimmy is better at. That's good.SartreFan wrote:And he's the antithesis of funny. They need to get with itcybereality wrote:Watching now. Hope the Rift comes soon cause I'm tired.

Re: Rift on the Jimmy Fallon Show Is Confirmed
While I'm not much of a fan of this show, since I never really watch TV this late.. I think the problem with Jimmy Fallon is that people frequently misinterpret his mannerisms.. They think he's nervous or something, but that's just how he acts. And while his jokes aren't huge laughs, they're just light talk.
If his show was really "terrible" it wouldn't be on TV very long.. I think it's a case of 'like him or hate him'.
He seems more focused on interviewing celebrity guests, than being the hilarious centerpiece of his show, like Colbert does.
Still, it will be interesting to see him test out the Rift in the next segment. I sure hope this gets it some more exposure!

I think just compared to any other comedian, or late-night host, or SNL cast member, he has always been the worst in his class. It's more curious how he gets work than anything else. Im still excited to see his reaction to the rift though. This will be kind of be the coming out party for the device in the main stream.

since i normally watch british talk shows this is a huge step down. they normally have guests interacting with each other as well as with the host. yes talk shows cheap enough to produce that we can do them well.
and now rift time.
