Have you guys mentioned the upgrade kit anywhere besides MTBS3D?

We need a new thread here definitely with all info but this forum section seems to have a less active base so the OVR dev forum and reddit should get info too I think. The DK2 makes this less attractive but hopefully there are a good number that would be interested.

Yeah! You guys need advertising power. I bet people are willing to get the VR kit for their own headsets. Now I can finally stop F5'ing, Phew. Now I just have to wait a month or so, it's Christmas all over.

Thank you guys for your great support. 6 units sold already with no advertising at all. That's great!

We are able to produce as much RiftUP!s as needed.

I expect a lot attention the moment we get a Road to VR article, possbily followed by other tech/VR websites.

Just "pledged" for a RiftUP kit. :D

(is it still called a pledge? I'm new to the Indiegogo thingy.)

Blimey - if you want an early kit guys, I'd get in there quickly if I were you. lol
Just checked the Funders tab, and more pledges are being made every 20 minutes or so.

I think the campaign is looking rather good already, Daniel / Kernel32. :)

I'm still considering cancelling my DK2 order.
It's mainly a money issue atm though, so I guess it will be months before Foculus take the balance for the DK2.

As Leahy said, I'm sure the RiftUP will give me more than enough of a VR fix until the CV1 arrives.

Damn, I don't know. I guess I'll have to buy both. :P

OzOnE.
P.S. I didn't know about the PenTile panel thing until Daniel mentioned it - you'd think that Foculus would have made that clearer in the DK2 specs?
Simply saying "1080p" is a bit of a marketing ploy really isn't it.

Been watching this thread from the beginning, have just grabbed an early bird :D

Any idea on shipping costs ?

You guys have done a great job it seems, really looking forward to UPing my DK1 !

I have 2 DK1's... I want to wait until I've UPed one before grabbing a second kit, how
long will you guys continue to make the kit after the campaign ??
(Would hate to miss out if the kit is as good as it looks)

Cheers,

Hewster

I'd like to back the stand alone display kit but I need more details about the LCD. Does it have to be the 5.9 inch discussed here, or could other, smaller displays be connected to the stand alone board?

It is indeed the 5.9" display discussed in this thread. The board can only handle this specific model.

Oh, @Kernel32 - roughly how much is shipping on the early bird kit to the UK?

I'm getting over the Facebook thing now, and I have to admit.... I'm a tiny bit jealous. :p

I just read part of the Time magazine article on Oc / Palmer / Carmack, and it's making me really sad that I didn't just send my CV to Oc in the early days. :(
I'd even take a very minimal salary just to be a part of the VR revolution and to work with those guys. I could make the Tea / Coffee for a while maybe? :D

(I'm waiting for people to think I'm "sucking up" just for the sake of it, but who cares. lol)

Anywho - woodsmoke, I see you've just bought an Early Bird kit. ;)

To try out smaller panels with the stand alone board aye. I suppose trials could be done with the RiftUP kit too. I have an idea for an HMD that I'd like to prototype. If it works everyone will look back at these ski masks and laugh. I have everything I need except the PCB design and layout skills. Cue rozsyno's prefunder...

@woodsmoke - are you in the UK by any chance? (it was the "aye" that did it. 8-) )

As I understand it, Daniel's MIPI "dev" platform had a separate breakout board for different panel types.

I'm pretty sure the RiftUP kits are set-up for only the 5.9" display though, so you'd need another custom breakout board to try a different panel.

I'm intrigued by your new HMD idea.
I can't imagine how to streamline the Rift much unless the panels are built into a pair of glasses?

That's a point - do the Early Bird kits definitely include international shipping?

If not, then the $259 kits aren't really much difference in price.

@leftbehind126 - I think you might be right. It seemed to start at 11pm GMT?

I'm sorry to disappoint you. The board is specifically engineered for the 5.9 LCD display model included. It is the best solution for single screen setup available. Hope I got the answer right the second time around woodsmoke.

We don't plan to add tools for opening the Rift, but there will be instructions on how to easily and safely do it. It is all about the technique and we've got a lot of practice and some tips to share.

Ordered one to put in my spare DK1.

Looks pretty nice.

How does the smaller screen size work with the current lenses in the DK1?

Are you guys planning on shipping these fairly quickly as well? This will be great to play around with until my DK2 arrives.

Looking forward to it!

Hi is this shipped 3 - 4 weeks after you order, or 3 - 4 weeks from the end of the campaign (30 days + 3 - 4 weeks)?

Are these coming from Prague? I live right next door in Slovakia. Is shipping still the same price as it would be to America?

EDIT: Bought one anyway. Daniel - I contribute to the Vireio Perception project. Will we need a custom distortion for this? If so can you send me the details and I can get it added for when people start to receive their RiftUps

No big deal on the time issue. I don't mind forking out a little extra for what you guys have done.

baggyg brought up delivery- I guess I'd ask for some clarification on it as well. Are you guys shipping them as they're bought? Because that'd be killer if the estimated delivery was really end-April.

@ido - don't quote me on this, but if you read back a few pages, it sounds like they have sorted a lot of the software stuff so the warping factors and "colour fringe" distortion will be properly corrected for the new display.

(I can't find the post atm, but Daniel did mention that he'd sorted a lot of the software stuff to give the best possible Rift experience with the new 1080p panel.)

EDIT: Oh, it was Mr Kernel32 who answered a lot of the questions regarding the matching of the new panel to the software...
http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.p ... 40#p148966

So, it looks like the warping factor is now in line with the "Crystal Cove" type display, since they are a similar size.
There could be a few tweaks to be made to the colour fringe correction (chromatic aberration correction), but it sounds like it's very good already. ;)

(I won't go into this too much, but for those who don't already know, chromatic aberration is slight fringes of colour you often see around the edges of a lens. This is caused by the different refractive index of light at different wavelengths, hence you often see a slight "splitting" of the Red and Blue light compared to the Green light)...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration

The Rift SDK has graphics GPU filters (HLSL?) which corrects for this.
Obviously with smaller-than-stock panel, the warp and chromatic correction factors will be slightly different, but AFAIK, the RiftUP panel will be using an existing "HD" / "Crystal Cove" type SDK template.

@Mattijs - again, we may have to await confirmation on this, but I'm pretty sure it's a 60Hz panel.
The motion blur is apparently far less than on the stock 800p DK1 panel though.

Daniel did mention a while back that he might be leaving provision for backlight strobing on the new panel.
I don't know if this made it into the final version, but it would likely require a fair bit of testing before you see any huge improvements.

From what Daniel and Kernel32 have said, the 5.9" panel looks VERY nice as-is, and is World's apart from the stock panel. ;)

I would imagine it just makes it a hell of a lot more comfortable to view things in VR.
It should also allow easier reading of much finer text, and a "further" viewing distance of fine details.

Thanks Kernel32. The question was really checking you guys have enough time and attention to respond to backers. I can make a 6" panel work. When I show you the prototype I reckon rozsyno will want to make another board for a slightly different (smaller) mipi phone panel. we'll see.
OzOnE2k10 wrote:As I understand it, Daniel's MIPI "dev" platform had a separate breakout board for different panel types.
Is that right.. So would that mean the Stand-Alone-Board kit is either one PCB, with HMDI in and USB hub on the same board as the display controller. Or two boards, the second being a dedicated display controller. And this second board can be swapped with other mipi display controllers as and when rozsyno releases them? That would be ideal. Perhaps someone can confirm?
OzOnE2k10 wrote:Are you in the UK by any chance?
Aye. A Scot in London, where abouts are you then? You'll have to review my prototype for me.
