Panasonic is bringing us a virtual world tour in 5 times Full HD. The stereoscopic system is titled "DIVE into World Heritage 3D," and it was demonstrated at Digital Content EXPO 2012. This system put five 3-D cameras to work to shoot, and the display was via five HD plasma panels.
" In collaboration with UNESCO, we photographed seven world heritage sites around the world. The purpose of these images is to allow people to have an experience like they'd have if they went to these sites in person. 3D cameras used to be very large and difficult to handle. In the last two years they have gotten much smaller, and devices like these 3DA1 (the AG-3DA1 3D camcorder) are now available. We shoot footage using five of these cameras together. "

Now if this could be done in a Rift compatible format that would be great.

It could be post processed to generate depth maps. Then that could be used to generate Rift-compatible video on-the-fly (including head tilting). The Rift experience would be just like looking through five windows.Fredz wrote:Panasonic is bringing us a virtual world tour in 5 times Full HD ... Luckily, there is very little actual 3D content in typical nature landscapes such as the proposed content in your demo video. The real 3D stuff is almost totally composed of near foreground objects, such as trees or bushes intentionally framed onscreen specifically to give a 3D experience. The director may even succumb to "at the audience" 3D contrivances to elicit "oohs" and "aahs" from the audience, to help keep them coming back for more.
If you skip the depth map processing, you would have to keep the Rift level while viewing (just like when wearing 3D glasses to view the five presentation monitors).
