It looks like in an quite unexpected move, DisplayPort will find a way into LCD and plasma TV sets!

A similar eDP (embedded DisplayPort) standard is intended for very simple controller-less LCD monitors, but iDP (Internal DisplayPort) defines a full featured DP 1.2 link between an internal display controller and display panel, which not only enables crazy resolutions and refresh rates for the future use, but also means that 2011 3D TVs could incorporate DisplayPort connectors which could practically allow full-resolution 1080p60 stereo gaming, unlike HDMI 1.4/1.4a which only features 1080p24 and 720p60 as mandatory full-resolution stereo formats.

Milpitas, CA., May 10, 2010 – The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today issued the new Internal DisplayPort (iDP™) interface standard for inside-the-box connectivity within flat panel TVs. The standard is designed to replace LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling) with a simpler and higher-performing connectivity technology based on the widely adopted VESA DisplayPort standard.

The VESA iDP standard addresses the connection between a TV controller SOC (System-on-a-Chip) and a TV panel Timing Controller (TCON) within a TV chassis. Only 17 signals – eight differential pairs and one Hot Plug Detect (HPD) signal – are needed to transport Full HD 240Hz at 10 bits per color over the iDP link, reducing cost and manufacturing complexity compared to the LVDS 96-signal requirement. The open and royalty-free standard will create a healthy competitive environment with component suppliers, further enhancing cost benefits while driving innovation within the consumer electronics industry.

This is a scalable standard, allowing for support of future design needs. For example, with iDP a 4K x 2K at 240Hz display only requires two banks of 16 differential pairs and one HPD for 65 signals. In comparison, LVDS would require 192 differential pairs (or 384 signals) to support this rate. Other iDP advantages include elimination of the many LVDS printed circuit board traces and device pins which result in reduced system form factor and cost, and less shielding requirement due to reduced EMI.

Similar to the existing VESA eDP™ (Embedded DisplayPort) interface standard used within Notebooks and other PC devices with internal displays, iDP is designed around the special needs of flat panel television displays and provides specific optimizations for internal flat panel TV applications.

“Today’s flat panel TV manufacturers are in a constant race to provide better picture quality, more realistic animation, and even 3D video. This continues to push refresh rates higher and has created the need for a new high-speed panel interface standard,” said VESA Executive Director Bill Lempesis. “VESA’s iDP standard meets that need while also helping control costs.”

Great! Then maybe there isn't need for compromizes anymore!

There are reasons why DisplayPort will be an ubiquituos display link interface, some of them mentioned here:

Most importantly, HDMI and single-link DVI are supported with cheap passive adapters, and dual-link DVI and analog VGA is supported with active convertors, so backward compatibility is not a problem.

DisplayPort also supports 15 m transmission of 1080p60 signal with standard cable (thanks to built-in line equalisation), can support multiple devices and audio/video streams using a single cable, and can use optical converters for full-speed long-distance communication.

The most recent DP v1.2 has 2x the bandwidth of HDMI or dual-link DVI allowing 2560x1600 @120 Hz over a single connector. Etc.

I don't think you would find one single counter-argument against DisplayPort being significantly superior to DVI/HDMI, not to mention internal LVDS links where DisplayPort allows for up to 6-fold reduction in number of differential wires for the same bandwidth.

It could, but how likely is it going to happen in 2011? I am pessimistic; I don't think it will happen unless/until there is a source signal demanding it. The only current source is from computer (actually I'm not sure if the ATI 5000-series support DisplayPort 1.2 or only an older version), and that seems not big enough user base for TV manufacturers to care -- only few percentage people connect gaming PCs to HDTVs.

A few people like me griping in forums and "boycotting" current 3D HDTVs for non-1080p 3D gaming support isn't going to change much. I think S3DGA would be the perfect organization to push for full HD 3D gaming support on 3D TVs, and I haven't seen any indication of any moves. Neil could use his clout there ...

Realistically, if the next PlayStation/Xbox/Nintendo supports full HD 3D gaming (and we can be optimistic), we can expect the 3D TVs coming out around that same time to adopt the required interface (whether DP or the optional HDMI full-HD 3D formats).

No need to be pessimistic. Replacing controller-panel LDVS links with DisplayPort is a no-brainer, because as I said you can get a 6-fold decrease of the number of differential pairs and all major suppliers are ready to switch do eDP/iDP. And when TV's display controller and flat panel's timing controller talk in the DisplayPort protocol and support uncompressed 120 Hz 1080p, tracing a few wires out to an external DisplayPort connector is a no-brainer as well.

As for sources, they are already there. ATI/AMD had inegrated DisplayPort 1.1/1.1a support starting from Radeon HD 3000, and there are a few 4000 and 5000 series cards with triple DVI/HDMI/DP connectors. DP 1.1 already supports frame sequential 1080p at 120 Hz, so there is no need to wait for the next gen console or DisplayPort 1.2. You only need supporting 3D displays, and they will hopefully follow in 2011 with a broader adoption of iDP 1.0 and eDP 1.2 in TV and monitor panels respectively.

AFAIK the main reason why current 3D TVs don't support 120 Hz is even the latest HDMI 1.4 transmitters from Silicon Image and others only support 5 Gbit/s (225 MHz pixel clock) at best, only enough for 1080p60 with 36-bit DeepColor. Ask Silicon Image and company why.
