Looks like Sony will be throwing down their dime at Tokyo Game Show:

Looks like a HMZ-T2 with a camera and a tracker :)

FAIL.

Too little - too late. We would have been jumping up and down a year ago, but times have quickly changed.

I love that Sony is investing in this, but they need to go back to the drawing board with the HMZ line. Although it looks cool and futuristic, the ergonomics are horrible and there are some major design flaws (locked IPD steps, no diopter, etc.), They can do a lot better.

They do surely need a reality check (No pun intended!) I also vote for back to the drawing board :)

If Sony can pair their HMD v2 to Sony Playstation for head tracking, it might help to spark the interest for casual/console gamers. It's a good direction but for us, we had done that after modding so the T2 is not that exciting anymore. I'm looking forward to higher FOV, higher resolution and wide focus lens.

Unless they come up with a higher FOV, they will not get anywhere IMHO.

Even with a head tracker, people will just be 'meh' once they use it a bit and dont feel immersion. Then they will go and tell their friends that VR is pretty average, without ever experiencing the real thing.

Also, too bad it doesn't have a stereo camera.

Kotaku's hands on:

Lame, it's not VR at all, just a video with head tracking.

It reminds me of Dragon's Lair, when they tried to make an interactive video pass as a real videogame. Don't get me wrong, I like Dragon's Lair, but this... meh.

This is not the HMD you're looking for...

EDIT
Oh, and the interactive video is monoscopic.

You can also Greenlight other Rift games.

Actually it sounds really cool to me. Head tracked video (if done well with minimal lag) would be a very cool thing. Some amazing cinematic possibilities. I'm curious about the video cameras they use to film the scenes, the video formats they are using, and the software to connect head tracking with panning.

The concept of using an embedded camera for head tracking is pretty nice I'd say, it's nice to see it implemented on a real device. I hope we'll get some technical infos about this some day.

At least they show that it's possible to do it with a single cam, and that it works well enough that a reviewer doesn't know if what he's watching is real or virtual.

The demo sounds awesome. Anybody found any videos of it?

"There were moments during the demonstration where I literally could not tell what was real and what was not."

I think that would be the definition of VR.

That actually sounds a lot cooler when hearing about the demo. I would like to try that myself.

Isn't this kind of moot since the Oculus Rift is coming to reality? Or am I missing something here?

Well its certainly less exciting, but still good to have big players like Sony in the game.
