Display Evolution / Pixel Integration

Post by colocolo »

this thread is dealing with the question how fast pixel integration for 5 inch displays will evolve.

Regarding the Oculus Rift project which is so brilliant , i am wondering how fast displays in that size will evolve.

Dont know much about the hardware in itself. But ive read something about microdisplays (LCOS) which have super high pixel intergration since 2005.

So for the future, would it be easily possible for display manufacturers building 5 inch displays with 8k * 4k resolution ?

Here are the last displays I've heard about in this range, but they are all LCD :
- LG - 5" - 1920x1080 (441 ppi) : http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/05/lg-d ... e-display/
- Toshiba - 6,1" - 2560x1600 (495 ppi) : http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/20/tosh ... esolution/
- Sharp - 6.1" - 2560x1600 (495 ppi) : http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/01/shar ... -sid-2012/
- Ortustech - 4.8" - 1920x1080 (459 pi) : http://www.ortustech.co.jp/english/news/20101026.html

As a comparison, the display used in the Oculus Rift is 5.6" 1280x800 (270 ppi).

SMD (the creator of the ST1080) say on their website that 8k4k LCoS panels are in development but they don't give any timeframe. They said they showed 4k2k 0.82" panels at CES 2012 but I don't know if this size can be used in a large FOV HMD.

thats looks quiet promising. i think microdisplays arent for wide FOV. But neverless in general they could manufacture displays 8k by 4k in 6 inch size , i think. perhaps i am overlooking some fact.
If i am not, than display manufacturers should be ashamed. cause leep optics exists since the 80´s and high pixel integration since 2005. i cannot imagine that engineers at big companies dont think about HMD with perfect FOV. Probably its the economic department in their company that is holding them back.
