Good laptop for use with 3D?

I am looking to get a gaming laptop for use with stereo 3D. I have about $1000 to spend. This is going to be used for a few different purposes:

- In a portable VR setup (backpack style) for use with Vuzix Wrap 1200VR.
- To use with a Panasonic 3D plasma (they just got a huge 55" one at work).
- For a DIY dual passive projection setup using pico-projectors.

So there are a few things I need:

- Obviously a dedicated graphics card, could be Nvidia or AMD.
- HDMI 1.4a compatibility (mostly for video).
- Blu-Ray drive.
- Dual video output (one VGA, one HDMI is probably good).
- Bluetooth

The laptop itself does not need to have a 3D screen, but that would be nice. Its $999 and it even comes with the Nvidia glasses. Seems like the best deal overall and has what I need. Is this a good choice? Is there anything else I should be looking at?

So I think I'm actually going to go with another laptop, the lenovo IdeaPad Y570:

Its only $700 and supposed to be really good for gaming (Nvidia GT 555M GPU). Its not 3D, but I can hook up an external 3D monitor or HMD, so that is fine. I probably wouldn't be using the 3D on the laptop screen too much anyway. Also, it doesn't have a Blu-Ray player, but I could always rip an iso if I need.

Does this seem like a good choice?

Hi, i am not sure exactly what laptop i would reccomend, but the Intel I5 series you are looking at seems powerfull enough. I'm not sure what a nvidia 550m mobile gpu can do but at a resolution at 800x600 or 1280x720 I think it could do ok. I would check out the specs for all the mobile chipsets and see what your acutally getting into with your laptop purchase.

One thing to note is that you surely should consider getting a SSD solid state hard disk even if its only like a 60GB or 120GB. It would save your data from sudden G-forces and clunk downs and actually speed up loading and operations.

The benchmarks for the Nvidia 555M are really good. For that same laptop, it can get 95 FPS in Metro 2033 (on low settings). Or on an older game like COD:MW it gets over 200FPS. I think this will be alright.

I've found a bunch of people having problems getting that Lenovo laptop to work with Nvidia 3D Vision (some driver issue). Guess I will just have to wait a few weeks and save up for the Toshiba. At least I know it works in 3D for sure.

Yeah sometimes its a hit and miss with compatability. I was acutally looking at some laptops to help you decide, I was'nt sure that you would go for a full blown 3d laptop as you said you did not need the 3d screen. But did you check out the autostereoscopic laptops, some are over 1600 dollars but one from toshiba was like 1150 or something msrp and was a few hundred off at retailers. I think they came with an ati video card something like a ati 6350 or similar and used DDD drivers, so I am not sure if you are looking just for nvidia or not.

I actually just bought a few things myself for my server, i got windows server 2008 r2 standard, 1TB harddisk and powersupply. They seem legitament too cause i contacted them and i got my windows server activated and a receipt.

I'm actually thinking about going with a lower-end laptop and saving the extra money to make sure I can get the HMZ-T1. I'm looking at this one, which is on sale:

Its not great, but for around $500 I don't think it gets much better. Should be good enough to run UT2004, HL2, L4D, etc. which is all I mostly test with anyway.

Ended up going with the Y570. Found a great deal on eBay for one at $650 with Blu-Ray and everything. Hopefully there won't be any problems with it.
