Projector based HMD?

Post by cadcoke5 »

I just posted in the user news and announcement forum about the Vivitek Qumi mini projector with 3D capabilities and WXGA resolution.

I don't think we have directly discussed the idea of using a mini projector in a HMD. I imagine such a thing might look something like an oversized motorcycle helmet. Here are some links to a Toshiba version of this idea;

Japanese video clip;

I imagine that using the projector I listed would require that the projection be reflected off a spherical mirror to make it wide enough to cover a large field of view for the small distance it would have to travel. The only other option would be a different projection lens.

The weight could be reduced if it doesn't try to isolate the user from the environment by totally enclosing the head. I.e. require that the user be in a totally dark room to prevent washing out the image.

Yes, I think it could work. I have plans to build something like that. Already got some parts, but been really busy. Will post more once I have something started.

I've considered projectors for 3D Vision Surround but have found the initial cost and the low bulb life (3000 hours isn't enough for my usage level) of traditional projectors too much. With 30,000 hour bulb life for $1500, I may use these. Have these actually been released? They're out of stock. When do you think they'll be available again? I'd like to build a closerange curved screen around a treadmill desk.
