Sam Biddle — Two university software developers have cooked up a pretty clever use of the iPad 2's new front-facing camera: tracking your face to create the illusion of depth. The effect is so wicked that it actually tricks the brain into thinking there's a real threedimensional world behind a glass.

For games and other visually-rich apps, being able to "look into" your iPad could be terrific. And it's seemed like Apple is thinking the same thing, given their patent for similar tech a couple years back. [MacRumors]

This has nothing to do with stereo 3D but with motion parallax, it's only an adptation of the demo from Johnny Lee (using a Wiimote) for the iPad and the iPhone. It uses the front cameras of the devices for eye tracking to render a view corresponding to the position of the observer. It's still nice though, coupled with the iGrilli3D parallax barrier or the 3DeeSlide lenticular screen it could also produce stereo 3D, but it's not the case here.

Cool, but not actually 3D. It only appears 3D when you watch in a 2D video.

Technically it's 3D just not stereo, using a different key (parallax) to convey depth.
The odd thing about using parallax and head tracking for 3D like this, is that the 3D effect is actually better if you close 1 eye. If your head is actually moving relative to the display it can be very convincing.
I suspect the reason it's better with one eye closed is that it removes the competition with the convergence signal.

its better with one eye, because with 2 eyes open you have something called *conflicting binocular cues*

check this doc out:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn1 ... aches.html

*conflicting binocular cues* into google gives many hits.

The reason it looks good with one eye closed is the same reason all those people are fooled by the 2D video. When you see it in 3D, its obviously fake.
