stereoscopy under ubuntu

Post by elypter »

what i want to do:
use my Zalman M190 for wine gaming under ubuntu with a gf8800.

I searched around this forum and on google but did not find much. I found one topic about using edimensional shutter glasses but i could not get that working.

what are the possibilities? are there tools for linux to get this working? for the beginning even anaglyph would be nice.

That would be interesting if you got this working. I have never tried this myself but it would make for a cool experiment. Assuming you can run DirectX 9 games at a decent speed under WINE, I guess the real question is if the hooks used on the 3D drivers (like say the IZ3D driver) would be able to run under WINE. These are usually Windows services that run in the background and intercept DirectX calls. I am not sure how this would work in an emulated system. Sounds complicated, I wish you the best of luck.

thanks for the info.
http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2939" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; was the thread i already tried a while ago but failed. i will try again and figure out what was the problem

i also tried using iz3d drivers under wine. during install it wanted to update directx which obviously failed. So i installed all existing d3dx... files from the winetricks list but i still always get a "no pipe" error when starting the driver.
any ideas?

Don't hesitate to post your results if you try again, I didn't try myself (I go back to Windows for stereo 3D) but I would be happy to help you getting this working.

I would be really surprised if this was possible since the Wine Direct3D implementation is only a wrapper for OpenGL.

haha

unfortunately i could not get the first application to run like it should.
"make user" did not compile neither "make "<username> but "make" did.
this compiled application did however not produce the promised result. it lagged but there was no overlay.

thats the output:

Hu, I forgot about that but some time ago I modified Genlock (which is quite similar to SoftGenLock) to make it compile with recent kernels, maybe you could try it instead :

Too bad !

It seems to compile well at least, the problem must come from an interaction with other modules related to the parallel port. Do dmesg, /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages give more information about the error ?

When I was adapting the code, I remarked that if I forgot to remove one conflicting module before modprobing genlock, I wouldn't be able to modprobe it afterwards even if I removed the conflicting module. So maybe you should make sure that you remove all conflicting modules before the first genlock modprobing.

i did remove all the 4 modules that needed to be removed before the first try.
i rebooted and tryed again. the first time i got "Killed" as answer, the second time it hang. i took a look at the logs and found this line:
"[ 21.725296] genlock: parallel io port 0x378 already in use"
how do i find out which else mod i have to remove?

the complete logs:

Re: stereoscopy under ubuntu

Post by Fredz »

Hmm, I knew I should have removed all the parallel port references in genlock, lazy me...

I think the genlock module is loaded at startup, that's why it hangs when you try to reload it manually. To prevent the module from being loaded at startup you can try to use modconf, I guess it should be available by default for Ubuntu. If that's not the case you can also try to manually delete the /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/misc/genlock.ko file.

Then you have to reboot, remove the modules that are using the parallel port and finally you should be able to modprobe genlock.

i installed modconf and tried it. it hang. so i removed it manually. then i rebooted and tried again but i get the same results.

that is what i did after reboot:

Weird, I don't know where this could come from. In the previous steps you've done, try to make install genlock again instead of copying the .ko file. If that still doesn't work, please post your dmesg, /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog (as an attachement maybe to not clutter the topic).

I guess the problem could also come from another module using the parallel port, but it's hard to guess which one.

Unfortunately I don't have access to my Linux box, so I won't be able to remove the parallel port code in genlock soon.

By looking at the logs it seems your graphics card is not using IRQ 16, you should have a look at /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/* to determine what its value is. If you find this IRQ value you'll have to modify the genlock.c file at line 141 and replace the "16" value with the one you've found before recompiling again :

Code: Select all

static int nv_irq = 16;
I'm afraid there is still a problem with a conflicting module using the parallel port by looking at your logs, but as I said it's quite hard to know where the problem is. Hopefully just changing the IRQ value will be enough to get Genlock working.

i changed the irq to 18 and now modprobe worked without error.
cat /proc/driver/genlock/state displayed the right value before and after activating.
but still it doesn't work.

this time the logs are flooded with this message

Code: Select all

Nov 26 18:04:22 azmodan kernel: [ 3586.480267] genlock: PROBABLY OUT OF SYNC - time between expected and real irq: 733897 us, frametime 16662 us, 0 skipped, lastdiff 0 us
i also switched to 60 Hz without effect.

Btw: i did all tests without any glasses. i hope this doesn't make a difference for genlock.

Ahh, good news at last !

The messages shouldn't be a problem, I had them too but it did work correctly. What doesn't work exactly ? Did you use a 2048x768 virtual mode ? Did you rmmod genlock before changing the graphics mode and modprobe genlock after the change ? Are you using two monitors ?
elypter wrote:Btw: i did all tests without any glasses. i hope this doesn't make a difference for genlock.
Nope, Genlock doesn't know if glasses are connected, so that does not change anything. If I had incorporated the code to send DDC signal to the glasses that would have been a different matter, but I've been lazy as well on this part...

The problem is that nothing happens. i thought the virtual desktop should turn into a 1 monitor sized flickering screen but i do not see any difference.
I have 2 monitors but the second is switched off. both with a natural and chosen resolution of 1280x1024. The virtual resolution of the activated monitor is set to 2560x1024.
The system booted with that settings.
I just noticed that the monitor im using (ZM M190) has dvi input. to get pageflip stereoscopy working in the end i need a subd monitor anyway but for testing genlock dvi could not be a problem could it?

now i also tried out the other tools from the tutorial:
E-D-activator did work i think. i reacted and did not crash.
vrizer preload always failed and (although not mentioned) i ran ./vrizer_rconfig. It quits with degmentation fault.

Code: Select all

Is it only switched off or disabled ? And what did you use to set the virtual resolution, nvidia-settings, xorg.conf, etc. ?
elypter wrote:both with a natural and chosen resolution of 1280x1024. The virtual resolution of the activated monitor is set to 2560x1024.
As I said, you MUST use a 2048x768 resolution, this resolution is hard-coded in Genlock. I've written code that should work for any resolution but I didn't integrate it in Genlock yet. If it happens to work at the fixed resolution, I can help you modifying Genlock to be able to use other resolutions.

I don't know, maybe you should try with a VGA connexion to be sure.
elypter wrote:now i also tried out the other tools from the tutorial:

Yes the E-D activator should work correctly, but I guess you can't see the effect since you don't use a VGA connexion.

i set everything with the nvidia tool and i disabled the monitor

CPU and OS is 64bit, that's probably the reason. In case of cpu incompatibility is it possible that ./vrizer_rconfig outputs some settings before dieing? Is there any possibility to run it on this system?

I'm afraid you won't be able to use it on a 64 bits system, it works by hooking a library (libGL.so) and this one needs to be compiled for the same architecture than VRizer (ie. 32 bits).

ah ok, i will try again if i have a 32bit os somewhere but thanks for now.
