Stereoscopic DOS games?

Post by CarlKenner »

Does anyone know of any good stereoscopic DOS games and where to get them?
I am currently working on adding headtracker and stereoscopic support to DOSBOX.
I seem to recall that there were many old DOS games that supported VR helmets and stereoscopic glasses.

I remember Descent worked with VR helmet but that's the only one I know.

You are going to have to do some googling, but I distinctly remember that some popular dos games were ported to DirectX - like the original Doom and Quake series. That might be easier.

That's easier, but it's cheating!
Also I'm emulating the tracker part as well.
I've got half the VFX1 emulated. So when I get my VR920 fixed I will be able to play VFX1 DOS games in VR.
All in glorious 320x200, 256 colour (stereo 3D, headtracked) graphics!

It may be cheating, but they look SO much better
I play the following ported games:
- Duke Nukem 3D (eDuke32 port with high resolution pack and SD_Duke mod)
- LameDuke (LameDukeX port, based on eDuke32)
- Doom, Doom 2 and Heretic (Doomsday port with high resolution textures and 3D models)
- Quake (JoeQuake port with high resolution textures)
- Descent (D1X port version 143, dated September 9, 2003)
- Descent 2 (D2X port version 025 dated June 6, 2003)
I would NEVER play the DOS versions of those games again!

Another DOS game I play in stereoscopy is Screamer Rally. I use it with VDMSound to have audio and dgVoodoo to emulate a 3DFX card.

I'm a little dubious of that list, saying Math and Word Rescue were in stereoscopic. It might be cheating, but pretty much any dos game supporting 3dfx is doable in stereo with dgvoodoo. That adds stuff like Blood, Carmageddon, Elder Scrolls 2, GTA 2, and a few more to the list. Also with the Vavoom engine you can run Strife, an awesome fps/rpg made originally using the Doom engine. I noticed Terminal Velocity was on that list, is it possible to run that on anything other than software mode nowadays?

I've got Nascar Racing 1 (with the patch) to recognise my fake 3D Bios (actually a fake LCD Bios with a fake fake 3D Bios), and it puts it into stereo mode. Now I just need to implement the actual stereo rendering. I'll have to make it render in anaglyph for now, because I bricked my VR920 while updating its firmware (don't worry, Vuzix are sending out a replacement as fast as is humanly possible). The Nascar Racing 1 patch won't boot at all without 3D Bios installed.

Unfortunately I couldn't get shattered steel to work, as its patch doesn't seem to work with the demo. After I patched it it just complains that I don't have the CD and it won't boot. The demo runs without the patch, but it uses some other method of putting the game into stereo (maybe it just renders it in line sequential format without letting programs know).

Not that I know of, but with a Glide Wrapper you can get them to render in direct3D, so you can run them on whatever setup you're using, in my case the now-dying Nvidia ones.
