PS3 and Xbox games on Samsung PN42A450 42' HDTV

Post by bencich »

Hi,
I was wondering if we can run Xbox, PS3 games and bluray in 3D on the Samsung PN42A450 42' HDTV? For activated the 3D, the resolution should be in 1024x768, but the ps3 and Xbox only has 720P, 1080i and 1080P. I did some researchs on the web, and no positive answers...
I can run pc games and movies on the TV.
Thanks a lot.

The PN42A450 is on of the not quite 720p 3D plasma TVs. Since it uses the checkerboard format it will only work with a PC in checkerboard at the native resolution of 1024x768. The Mitsubishi converter will not work as it will upscale the image to 1920x1080 checkerboard (and would require a device to lie about the hardware ID). So sorry to say with that TV you will only get 3D from a PC.

From what I understand those old sub-720P 3D ready sets don't work too well with modern stereo standards. So its not going to work with HDMI 1.4, which is needs for PS3 3D or standalone 3D Blu-Ray. There are one or two converter boxes available but I think they are all designed for 1080P/720P. For Xbox it would require the developers to specifically support that mode (checkerboard) and resolution. I know some games do support checkerboard (Avatar, Invincible Tiger) but I believe it is at 1080P only. So console 3D support is not looking good. However you should be able to use a PC to play PC games in 3D and also 3D Blu-Rays with a program like ArcSoft Total Media Theater 3. That might be your best option.
