Hi everyone, after that old 17" iz3d monitor I got burned to the grave, I decided to go the Planar DIY way. I finished it and its looking great, but it seems the glass makes pop out effect look less impressive. I mean it pops up great and depth is also awesome, but everything is still behind the glass. Is there any way that pop up can appear popping out in front of the glass? or because of the technology the 3d will always look behind the glass?
Thanks,
Alan

Also is there any software to watch movies in 3d in the planar (top-bottom) setup? iz3d works great for games in Mirror (top-bottom) but I cant find anything for movies

Re: Planar DIY question about pop up 3d effect
You mention glass in your post, are you using clear glass like I am or plexiglass (clear hard plastic) or a half silvered mirror(one-way/two-way mirror like those used for teleprompters)?
I have not gotten a mirror for mine but I'm sure it would improve the 3D effect when I do.
First problem I came across with clear glass is the reflected monitor's image was dark, so I used the ATI control panel to adjust the brighteness, contrast and gamma so both pictures matched in terms of light getting to the eyes.
Second problem that I think a mirror will fix is the reflected image is not as sharp as the bottom monitor's.
I get about the same amount of pop-out and depth as an iZ3D monitor plus no(or very, very tiny amount of) cross-talk (ghosting)!
So I am satisfied for the time being, but hope to get a 50/50 mirror as soon as I can.
Let me know if you need mirror sources.

Sure, there are players that can handle mirror setups, Stereoscopic Player being the BEST (http://www.3dtv.at)
You can try StereoMovie Player also (http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stvply/index.html)

I came here to chew bubblegum and to see 3D...and I'm all out of bubblegum!

Oh, I see what you mean about "behind the glass".
Yeah the pop-out illusion makes it seem to be coming out of the lower monitor's screen, I don't think there is any way to change that in this universe, it is all about light and reflectivity and quantum physics no doubt!

Re: Planar DIY question about pop up 3d effect
Im using a mirror I got at a shop, seems to be coated on both sides (at least it looks to me). The bottom LCD picture is darker and shows some minor ghosting, while the top reflection is bright and has no ghosting. 3d effect minus the small ghosting is great.
I tried to use the top one as the default and use polarized glasses (both same eyes polarization) because bottom mirror looks really to dark when not looking at 3d content. This solution is great but I think because its a reflection I never have been able to get it to look how it should lol. Direction is always screwed up sigh!
I will try the players you suggest

Are the tops of the monitors near each other?

Thanks, I made my Planar setup and its awesome. I think it is the best solution, even better than a 3d monitor lol!. Simply awesome.

semi transparent glass and boxing is better but not necessary. a simple mirror works as well.
about the pop out effect its only because of the driver settings. nothing to do with the setup afaik
