3DTV Still Not That Popular in Japan

The land of the rising sun may be the world's fastest-adopter of new formats, but a year on, how are 3DTV sales doing in Japan? The Nikkei examined the situation, and unsurprisingly 3DTV still has a long way to go.

While prices have fallen by 20 per cent for Panasonic and Sony's 3DTV models, they're still up to 50 per cent higher than non-3D sets, which could account for the fact that only 2.6 per cent of 40" or larger TVs sold in Japan between 2nd - 8th August were 3D-enabled.

Nonetheless, we're constantly being bombarded by stats from manufacturers claiming forecasts of millions upon millions of 3DTV shipments in the coming year. Perhaps the James Cameron-directed Black Eyed Peas documentary will change people's minds. (Heh). [The Nikkei via CrunchGear]

hmm, since the japanese obviously are our mental and cultural superiors perhaps this whole 3d thing is goofy and we should all just go outside and play ball.

Once Microsoft enables all the 3d features into Microsoft Windows and the whole gammit of hardware catching up with software or somewhat less to stereo3d software then and neccessities will be there. Also I think the japanesse like partying and if theres 3d raves so when you put on your 3d glasses and your clothes look like a computer polygon cloth or womens dress or something they might not care to much or subside to the pasay usage. 3D needs to have a different usage first.

There's a tiny timespan between the hdtv era and 3dtv. Many who purchased a hdtv do not want to invest in a 3dtv when they just bought a hdtv... I have yet to evaluate how a 3dtv looks like but i have doubts on the image quality. There are 3d-sammys for sale in a nearby town but no 3d showcased in any way. Just a simple 2d-dvd circulating on them. :(
