Laptop 3D

Post by shanedidona »

Hello. I have a laptop and I was wondering what types of 3D I can get. Will LCD shutter glasses work with the LCD on my laptop? If not, do I have any other options? I have been using red-cyan anaglyph, but the whole colors thing is annoying. I cannot purchase a new display, but can purchase glasses. Thanks :-)

You really have limited options with a laptop display. I guess the VR920 will probably work if you have a decent video card. Not sure about anything else.

Unfortunately the only 3D viewing method that will work on a conventional laptop display is anaglyph (red/cyan, green/magenta or blue/yellow).

Other than that, you could connect the laptop to an external 3D-ready display - I've done that with a Zalman 3D LCD, Samsung 3D DLP, and Samsung 3D Plasma.
HOWEVER this has some limitations... You won't be able to do this with the Viewsonic or Samsung 3D LCDs (require a dual-link DVI connection - not available on most laptops), 3D DLP projectors (requires NVIDIA 3D Vision Driver which currently won't work on NVIDIA M (Mobile) GPUs), the iZ3D monitor (requires a dual video connection - not available on most laptops), and some other 3d displays.

But... there is light at the end of the tunnel. Acer will soon (October?) release a laptop with a micro-polarised 3D screen. Plus yesterday Sony announced they will (next year?) release Sony Viao's with a 3D screen.

But none is actually available for purchase today, right? I remember reading about an ASUS G50V with a 3D display more than a year ago, e.g. http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/09/asus ... g-laptops/ The ASUS G50V has been available now for many months in different configurations, but none with the 3D screen.

I asked the company representatives could I buy one now, they said I could "modify" a laptop now, but didn't go further into what that meant. These were using autostereoscopic displays on the model I saw running, they had several models though. I went to their website they gave me and didn't find much on stereo3D laptops, just the s3d displays. I am wondering if they are just promoting to OEM's wanting to retail an s3d laptop solution to consumers, not sure.

Yeah, they have been showing prototypes at trade shows for well over a year and nobody has delivered yet.

there is also some polirazation film that you can use with some laptops, however I'm very "apprrehensive" about their driver support.
