The Ascent

Post by sgsrules »

The Ascent is a solo and co-op Action-shooter RPG set in a cyberpunk world. It releases on July 29, and is available on Game Pass.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/979690/The_Ascent/

The game runs on UE4, and works in D3D11 or D3D12. I tried it with Losti's Universal UE4 V3.60 fix and it fixes most of the issues but some shadows and decals are broken. The game is pretty impressive in 3D, even though it's an isometric shooter the levels have a lot of verticality in them and are incredibly detailed.

Universal fix 5 should fix this.

This game works flawlessly with the UE4 v.502 fix. The environments look absolutely stunning in 3D. It's amazing that such a small team was able to pack in so much detail in every frame. it's basically like Diablo with guns in a cyberpunk setting on steroids. I played the game for about 2 hours. Overall it's pretty fun but I can see it getting a bit repetitive, even though the environments are incredibly detailed they tend to look the same after a while. I don't think playing it by myself could sustain my interest for too long, I'm not a fan of Diablo-like games. But I'm mainly getting this to play in couch coop with friends.

Performance is ok. I'm running it with everything set to Ultra except shadows on High on a i7-8700k and a 2080 Super and I get around 30-50 fps at 1440p. The main hub area is by far the most demanding and I was getting about 25 fps until I dropped Shadow Quality down to High. Visually I can't tell the difference between High and Ultra Shadows, but I went from about 25fps to 32 fps in the more demanding areas. Keep in my that the game hasn't been officially released so hopefully, they'll optimize it a bit more. I tried it win DX12 mode as well with all the RTX bells and whistles turned on and DLSS set to Balanced an I was getting about 50+fps at 4K, it looked great but I'de rather play it in 3D even on my projector at 720p. The game was is using the older DLSS 2.1 but you can replace the dll with the new 2.2.60 version.

Good eye. Yes that's the only thing I've noticed so far that was off. It doesn't affect all particles, just a few specific ones. It's hardly an issue but i figured I'd add those to the screenshots as well.

The Ascent just released.
DO NOT GET THE GAMEPASS VERSION.

The Gamepass version has no DX11 (So no 3D), No DLSS and Broken Ray Tracing. DX12 currently has performance issues as well. The Steam version works perfectly in 3D running on DX11.

Reviews are overall incredibly positive with the main issues being a few bugs, UI design and performance.

This game indeed does look incredible in 3D, Shader caching performance is a bit rough, although I guess that will settle after it's encountered everything.

Yes, I can afford it now, but I think it's a waste and I refuse to pay these ridiculous prices. I have tons of games to run maxed out 60fps for at least the rest of the year, so I just need to build up some patience and reprioritize and wait. When it gets to CAD $800, that's when I'll jump on it, I think.

Steam version crashing on start with the universal fix, any ideas on what could be causing it? Global driver change is on in 3DFM. Much appreciated if anyone has any ideas on what I can try.

How are you launching it? I noticed that with UF7.xx I now cannot just run the -shipping.exe, I have to run many games via 0StartGameVia3D-MigotoLoader.cmd (option 5), otherwise they crash.

Much appreciated! That fixed it. This one is worth getting on Steam imo, try it out with gamepass if anyone hasn't yet. Worth checking out. Was worth picking up on Steam to be able to apply the fix.

I'm experiencing "flashing lights" effects when AA is set to medium in this game. They disappear after about 10 seconds of not moving but reappear after the camera moves. It's hard to describe but kinda like police vehicle lights going off in multiple places on the screen and then they fade away. I'm guessing it's something related to TAA? This goes away when AA=HIGH or ULTRA but then at these settings there's a significant performance hit AND there are some issues with reflections/speculars or whatever that effect is - it's visible in the screenshot below on the crate and the laying barrel things (it's more prominent on larger models like some of the robots walking around).
Tested with UF7.5, 7.4, 7.32, all the same, none of the fix options seem to help with this.
Any way to get rid of those flashing lights as I'd like to keep AA at MED?

thx

I have checked this, yes, using lower AA settings than HIGH causes lights to flashing. Also without any AA/AO things (modification of the ini) present. I noticed some issues in some games with reduced AA e.g. The Pathless. I have not found any solution for this, this is not a common shader thing. SORRY !

:(

Can anything he done about the specular effect (or whatever that effect is) on the objects that looks a bit wrong at AA=HIGH/ULTRA? That way at least at those settings the 3d would be perfect.

Losti, happy to report that all the issues I mentioned are gone with v7.63! (the flashing lights show up, as you mentioned, only on AA=LOW). Not sure what you did, but all is good, fix and game look stunning! Thanks! :D

Tested with UF7.5, 7.4, 7.32 and even one or 2 old 5.xx builds. I might've tested with 7.6 as well but dont remember.
