The Japanese National Institute of Information and Communications Technology are making slight headway towards more practical methods of capturing moving images in normal lighting conditions and then displaying them as a 3-D holographic image.

With the aid of a computer, multiple micro fly-eye lenses and an HD camera they are able to capture a 1 cm sized and 2° viewing angle moving image (see article for plan diagram). Tiny steps before hologram capture becomes commonplace. Here's an example of one image they made earlier.
