How to keep Windows 1809 ?
So finally MS Windows set me a deadline to 06.05.2020 for the upgrade to version 1909. I always set my network connection as metered connection but it does not prevent the upgrade anymore.
Anybody has a suggestion/workaround?

Re: How to keep Windows 1809 ?
The permanent fix is to follow this guide, but do method 2, then method 1. Method 2 stops the services that perform Windows updates, and method 1 renames the DLL's so that they can't be started again.
For method 2, work on the WaasMedicSvc service, then the Windows Update service. When you click "Check Name", just hit all of the OK buttons to close out completely to finish method 2. For method 1, work on WaaSMedicSvc.dll and then wuaueng.dll.
The only time they'll be reverted now is if you rename them back or revert/reinstall Windows. The only side effects I've noticed is that the bottom-right tray notifications (that looks like a text bubble) won't work at all, and Windows Update won't open in the Settings app IIRC.

Re: How to keep Windows 1809 ?
Yeah I have the same predicament, all of the sudden windows told me my version was no longer supported and had already downloaded 1909 - restart now? I used wushowhide tool to "hide" 1909, but I am not sure that's going to stop it from being installed. When I go to shut down my pc, it still has option to "update and restart". I have a system image file from a few weeks ago to fall back to if it updates, and then I will have to try the above suggestions I suppose (thanks for posting schwing). Or maybe I will test out 1909 with 3D driver patching now that its working, I'm just trying to stay with what ain't broke since I have run into various issues before with these updates...

Thanks for this. Although I don't really follow why you are saying doing it this way opposed to the guide. I can't work on the WaasMedicSvc service with your instrcutions it just says "Access Denied."schwing wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 9:25 pm The permanent fix is to follow this guide, but do method 2, then method 1. Sorry it's been a while since I did it. The medic service brings back the windows update dll periodically. So as long as you've disabled both permanently, then it doesn't matter what order you do it.

But why do you want to keep using the old Win10 version? 3D Vision works fine with the newest drivers and newest Win10 version (only exception are DX11 games protected with EAC).

Re: How to keep Windows 1809 ?
True - but we did not know this compatibility would exist for so many driver releases, when NVIDIA's support stopped (thanks to the creative hard work of some forum members). I still believe that, at some point, NVIDIA will make a driver change that will invalidate the ability to attach 3D Vision drivers. As I suggested in another forum thread on this same topic, you might consider periodic Windows OS backup using Windows Media Creation tool (with good, stable OS). I have not found a game that does not work with 1809/425.31 combination. With a dual boot setup, I allow my other Windows OS disk to use latest updates and drivers, for VR gaming.
My "frozen" 1809 version recently became corrupted by a failed .NET installation, and I could not repair or remove the update, even with tools like DISM. I had to restore it from my backup (offline while loading 425.31 driver), but I still had to reload all my apps and reconnect all my downloaded games. I created a dual partition on a new disk drive, with the OS partitioned to be as small as practical (around 45-50 GB). The reconnection of Steam games was effortless, although 2 games from my Library had to be manually located. Origin games were more difficult, generally requiring help to locate EACH game on the computer. In some cases, this location was not enough. I had to temporarily rename the existing game, start a new download, stop (not pause) download, delete partial download, restore (identical) game name, and then resume download. Epic Games required the more complicated process for EVERY game, AND extraction of all local save files for games.

Revert what you did in order to get the security updates. Restart your computer if needed. Windows 10 is pushier than older OS's, so I don't expect a good time out of trying to pick certain updates, but you're welcome to try.

Unfortunately, I could not revert either - OS could not move/delete corrupted files, so re-install required.

Rename the files back, set the services to start automatically (whatever value they were at), and probably restart Windows. It doesn't require an entire reinstall of Windows. Windows has always started up normally with the files renamed.

Re: How to keep Windows 1809 ?
I already did the reinstall, so this discussion is academic.
I did not know which of my many .NET files were bad. In fact, when the corruption first happened, I could not even start OS. I had to use DISM to partially recover OS, using my 1809 backup as DISM source. DISM was only around 85% successful (it could not change some files, and it did not specify which files). I discovered that at least my .NET files were involved In corruption when I could not run LOSTI’s great new UE4 1.18 troubleshooting mode. None of the .NET repair tools worked, either...

But this only happens with multiplayer mode in games right? Single player should be fine?Necropants wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 5:08 pmYou realize you just answered the question yourself ) that's exactly why. Also who knows whats to happen in the future. Hey, you could try a nifty little prog called Windows Update Blocker. Has a very small PC footprint - runs from a single installed file.
It's been on my setup for 6 months and makes it very easy to stop updates dead in their tracks (very easy to re-enable updates too).

I 'm using Sledgehammer script. It lets you enable/disable windows updates and also install specific (like security) updates. Works like a charm. I'm still on 1803

Re: How to keep Windows 1809 ?
It's too late for me, I tried one of the methods suggested by Schwing but one day Windows installed the upgrade nonetheless. I'm on v1909 now and thx to 3D Fix Manager with roberts workaround 3D still works, although I had to install the driver 2 times again because of 3D suddenly not worked anymore!?
Now I'm testing the app "spydish" for preventing further upgrades.
I read good things about it, but I also read that it will prevent big windows upgrades only until windows stops to support the version installed.

Re: How to keep Windows 1809 ?
The official wushowhide tool is still working for me, hides 1909 and I still get all the other 1809 updates I want. I did have to hide it twice, will probably pop up again at some point, but windows gives me plenty of time to hide the update before it downloads and can install.Shift-E wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 8:26 am Yeah I have the same predicament, all of the sudden windows told me my version was no longer supported and had already downloaded 1909 - restart now? I am sure at some point there will be a game that forces me upgrade to current release, but for now I am sticking with the older official 3D support.

Re: How to keep Windows 1809 ?
I was staying on v1809 by using Windows Update manager by David Xanatos:
https://github.com/DavidXanatos/wumgr/releases
However, now I'm on Win 10 v2004, driver 451.67 with 3DV. This has been made possible fairly recently by using the BringBack3DV tool:

Re: How to keep Windows 1809 ?
My dual-boot Windows 10 setup is again experiencing issues. My 2004 version has become corrupted, unable to be repaired by Windows update troubleshooting, sfc scannow, and DISM tool (still boots up, everything working but Oculus game downloading). My 1809 version would not start for a day, but suddenly started working again.
I contacted factory support for my custom PC build, and they again reiterated their strong belief that Windows 10 does NOT work well with dual-boot setups, making them prone to problems. Has anyone else had issues with dual-boot Windows 10 systems, like excessive disk checking/fixing during startup?

Nope, absolutely no problems at all, its very stable. I suspect they are telling you that simply because they don't want to deal with the extra complexity from a support perspective.

Just re-installed 1809 v.2 and am using the metered connection trick to stop the update, as detailed here by Jay (JayzTwoCents)... https://youtu.be/PRbMfZKuRUo?t=189
...is this sufficient...? ...or should I go through step 2 then step 1 in the guide schwing posted?

I took multiple steps to disable updates, beyond setting metered connection, including changing group update policy.

Re: How to keep Windows 1809 ?
Yeah, I'm going to have to take another look at it because it forced an update on me today when I logged on.
I'm not sure if using the metered connection trick is just not enough, or if my O.S. might have updated because I turned on the "Pause for 30 Days" option, then turned it off again...
...I turned the 30 day pause on to try and prevent updates before I had a chance to alter things, but it seems that doing that kind of screws you? I can't remember the exact message that comes up when you click it, but when I read it I remember thinking "crap, I just screwed my installation".
My plan now is to re-install 1809 and try the metered connection trick without clicking on the 30 day pause option. If I still get the forced update, then it's something to strike off of the list of possible options. I'm trying to find the easiest way to do it, but trying to keep things simple can often be quite complicated.

The Method Schwing outlined definately works btw. I actually realised I was actually on 1803 and I had to reverse all of that process he linked before the Windows Update page would even display on my system. XD
