Interactive visualization on 3D ready DLP HDTV TVs

Hi,
my field of research is immersive visualization and interaction.
I use the VTK library (based upon openGL) to generate stereo pairs and the nVidia driver to send them to two projectors (quad buffering, clone mode). My graphics card is a nVidia Quadro FX 4600.

It seems that only stereoscopic videos can be seen on 3D ready TVs (Samsung, Mitsubishi), with the stereoscopic player or with the TriDef software.
Now the question is: can I use a DLP HDTV TV to visualize interactively in 3D?

Once I plug the DVI cable on the graphics card and the HDMI to the TV, I have to provide a stereo image coded with the checkerboard pattern.
Will nVidia drivers support this stereo mode?
Otherwise, is there a hw device (or a driver) that enables this kind of “on-the-fly” conversion? I know that SimplifiDigital is working on it, but the first prototype will be available on April 2009.

there is a registry tweak to convert 'normal' interlaced or interleaved output to checkerboard on the (xp) Nvidia driver.

I suggest you use the search and try it out first, before you get that TV. But in general it should work similar to your projectors with NV drivers.

But you could use Iz3D driver, too. It has checkerboard output since version 1.09. But it is not for free - only some testing.

Hi Luke, thank you for your answer.
I know about the registry tweak. Howerer, in the posts I was unable to find a solution for nVidia Quadro graphics cards. Moreover I am not sure this tweak + nVidia stereo driver can work also for openGL applications and not only for DX.

The DLP support of the Iz3D driver is very interesting.
On their website they claim it is only for ATI RADEON graphics card. I just wrote on their forum, I hope to have some news soon.

Sorry I forgot: Welcome to the board :-)

I think it does not cost anything when you have AMD/ATI card, but it costs 50 or 100$ (per PC) for other cards (aka Nvidia). However it should work in general, but there might be more bugs.

I'm pretty confident they'll help you if they can. However I'm not that shure, if it would run well with openGL, since it's main use is DX. But that is the test periode for ;-)

Well I would advise you to try it out (if it's not too much work). You should see if it works right when you have a ... strange picture. Maybe try it out at a LOW resolution, since it's more obvious then.

It seems like you read around a little.

I have tried the iz3D driver, but it seems to work only with DX and not with openGL. I am still waiting for an answer on their forum.
However, now I am going to do it myself. I am planning to apply the checkerboard pattern on-the-fly for openGL-based applications directly in VTK.
I will keep you posted.
