Yet another DIY HMD

Post by z50j »

Hi all. I've been following the forums for a while so I decided to register.

for now I kinda have an android based HMD.

The only streamer with acceptable lag and detail is KinoDesktop. but the problem is it only works in wondowed mode. I can play Oculus Demos with a gamepad but no headtracking. There is Kainy that could stream full screen, thus works with Tridef, but the artifacts and lag was unplayable.

My plan now is to buy this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-VGA-2AV-Co ... 27f246fe9b
and harvest the display from my tablet, a N070ICG-LD1

and this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/9DOF-MPU-9150-3 ... 485561b5f4
to make an EDtracker which is a 9DOF Arduino based Headtracker.

I've seen how to make an EDID spoofer but FWIR they dont work anymore, is that right? should I still make one?
most importantly, is it possible the hack/spoof/mod the Arduino so the PC will think it's an Oculus Tracker?

thanks :)

You should buy your LCD controller and LCD from the same seller, if not you may have compatibly problems, I would look for a LCD controller sold with a LCD, it should have all the needed cables for connecting the LCD to the LCD controller, and the LCD controller should be programed to work with that LCD.

Some games need the tracker, some games need both the EDID and the tracker, however the STM32F3DISCOVERY when re-programed with the instructions over here:

http://yetifrisstlama.blogspot.com/2014 ... verse.html

only worked with DK1 only games, and games made to be compatible with both DK1 and DK2 fail to work with the STM32F3DISCOVERY tracker.

With the EDID and STM32F3DISCOVERY tracker there are about 30-40 or so "good" DK1 demos, stuff you might want to play more than once, plus Quake 2 VR and Doom 3 VR, that work.

You could do what I did and try to copy the real DK1 tracker:

sadly full DK1 compatibility only gets a few more games working, and I was able to get some Steam games working, however most demos and games are now DK2 only.

Thanks for your reply.

So is there no way use a different tracking hardware than the STM32?

Hopefully OSVR will help make our DIY VR headsets universally compatible

I have not found any software or hardware that will fool the demos or games into beveling you have a Oculus Rift, other than the EDID spoofer, STM32F3DISCOVERY tracker, and the clone tracker I put together, I believe it should be possible with software to emulate both DK1 and DK1, but I don't know any programming, so that may be wishful thinking.
