So I went there and demonstrated my system to them on Thursday and Friday. Even though it still has a lot of work left to be done, they were impressed and said they can't wait until they can buy one.

That's really sweet! But it doesn't sound like they're interested in taking you on-board and further developing it in-house, huh? If not, I hope you can assemble a team and at least target the professional market first. It seems like it would be more robust than IMU-based mocap as well as being less tedious to set up than optical based systems.

Re: RF Tracking System
Valve is an odd place in terms of how they do business ie hire up the absolute most intelligent and capable people and then let them roam free and see what they produce. I think they know VR/AR is a long ways off, and I don't think they're eager to buy up somebody in the VR marketplace. They're very much in the research phase and just seeing what happens. They've only bought people who clearly have something that is a home run (mods like Counterstrike and Dota 2). Also, why buy my project up when they can continue to work on their own project while I work on mine separately? Keeping them separate increases the chances that there will be a viable tracking system in the future.
I'm aiming for something around $300 that's a devkit.

I'd scoop up a dev-kit straight up... sure would be nice if it were Unity enabled... which I think it already is, yes ?

Re: RF Tracking System
Hi, Krenzo! Have you tested such system with transmitters placed in the corners of the room (ceiling one). Such placement gives better difference between signals Time-of-Arrival, as I understood. How does human body interfere signal?
We are from Russia and we produce training systems, don't you want to sell us early prototype of this device for our internal purposes (with corner mounted transmitters preferably, we need 10x10 meters area, two receivers). We are intersted to buy such devices from you (maybe non consumer version, for non consumer price), if you are interested to talk about, how can I contact you directly?

Re: RF Tracking System
Well, we can made radio frequency licensing for your device in Russia if it will fit our goals. So you say, what better idea is to use 4 base stations in the corners with 4 transmitters on any of them? So one of them will be line-of-sight any time. Ok, if you say it is not ready for now, can you name any time to ask again?

Re: RF Tracking System
Could this be improved by using different (not unlicensed) spectrum? What would be the ideal spectrum to use if licensing constraints weren't an issue?Krenzo wrote:The human body does interfere with the signal. You can get away with a hand or arm in front of the signal, but it will add about an inch of inaccuracy to the position (with no other unoccluded transmitters to compensate). Anything more like a torso in the way will degrade the signal too much.

Re: RF Tracking System
Do you think its a major issue for ToF based systems? It's kind of like optical I suppose, apart from that it just degrades accuracy rather than making it totally impossible.
How expensive are the antenna theoretically (I mean if they were produced on a reasonable scale)?

No news since last September?!
I hope Krenzo is still here. I am just curious how you capture the waveform like:
http://www.empiresmod.com/krenzo/10-17-2012/middle.png
Over-GHz ADC will be needed to capture that. Time stretch? How do you do that?

Sounds good. Will having multiple base stations primarily give you better coverage or higher resolution?

Re: RF Tracking System
Thanks for the nice explanation. Keep up the good work. I am sure this technology is not only good for the gamers but is also useful in other applications.
Krenzo wrote:I'm sorry about the lack of updates. I feel like I should have progressed farther than I have, but since this thread has been bumped, I'll respond.
Subsampling techniques allow me to capture a GHz signal with a slower ADC. Because the signal repeats, I can take a sample of one part of the waveform and then take another sample when the signal repeats but at a different spot (slightly later). I can then reconstruct the whole thing after I've taken small shots of each part of the signal. The most practical use of this technique is in a stroboscope where flashing a light on a rotating object can make the object appear to be still or to be moving very slowly when the object is actually rotating very fast.
I had some frustrating bugs that I had to track down. RF can be very difficult to work with. I did not have enough shielding isolation between certain elements in my RF circuity, and there was interference being generated. This took a few months of designing and ordering revisions of a circuit board to try to fix the issue. I also had a software bug that took me awhile to track down. I did optimize the software of the system so that it's faster. Its update rate is about ten times faster now.
I just ordered more transmitter boards to have more than one base station to test and play around with.

Re: RF Tracking System
If you want to hit consumer market, you must use your technology in easy to understand and revolutionary products... for example VR gun with full positional tracking and strong recoil system or accurate VR gloves. This is the products that for now is missing in VR World.
