Mars Demo for the Rift

Post by Marulu »

A Mars demo for the Oculus Rift has been shown of at SpaceAppsNYC. The demo has been created using Mars Rover data.
The demo won a prize for being the most inspiring thing shown of at Mars SpaceAppsNYC.
Some astronautes like Ron Garan took their time to explore Mars using this demo.

I really hope they make this Demo public I would love to explore Mars trough the Rift.

Okay so this is *actual* mars-footage right? We're LITTERALY exploring other planets from our couches now, is that it?
These are incredible times we are living in.

This is a very cool idea (viewing mars through the Rift) , although I'm not convinced there is that much to see :D

I'm not sure if the source code for the Aurora Demo is available, but I guess it could be. So I think if someone could put the Mars photo in there you can view it on the dome.

You're not a proper Oculus Rift fan then. :P Everyone knows that Oculus Rift + Mars = saving the world from a gateway to hell that the Union Aerospace Corporation accidentally opened at their Mars City research base.

Torque 3D is an open source game engine and the source is available to everyone on GitHub:

https://github.com/GarageGames/Torque3D

As for the Aurora Borealis demo, all of the scripts and objects are included with the demo. So you could switch from the dome to a full sphere. Two issues come to mind:

1. That 360 Mars image is too large to be used by your graphics card. You would have to slice up and scale the Mars 360 image and map the slices onto the sphere.

2. You would need to get permission from the person that assembled the Mars image to distribute it with your project. This may be the bigger stumbling block. The original source of that Mars view is 360cities.net, and their licensing is here: http://www.360cities.net/panorama-licensing.

I don´t think so, because when they showed this demo of they called it "3D Oculus Rift Mars environment" based on Mars Rover data.
I think Nasa used the data they collected from Mars and turned it into a 3D model.
But every hill and star is the same you would see on mars, so it kinda is *actual* mars-footage.

Just buy Doom 3 BFG and follow the instructions in this guide: http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpbb/viewtopic.p ... 40#p116451
Now you are able to kill demons in VR, on mars.
