I'm new to the whole VR/AR thing, but really interested and excited at the same time - is this the way in, or is it worth saving a bit more for a Vuzix model? I understand the resolution and fov are way less, but I want to know if VR is for me - is this a good test?

If you are interested in VR, then go with the Rift. Those cheap HMDs are not really worth getting, especially not for VR.

So do you think i should wait for the consumer rift or be impatient and go for the dev version?
One thing i am unsure about with the rift is - can i use windows normally and watch movies etc? if not then i'll probably be looking at something like the vr920...
Thanks for the quick reply, Tom

2D applications are not supported on the Rift. Meaning the Windows desktop, web browsing, etc, will not look correct. However you can play 2D or 3D videos using the Stereoscopic Player. Games will have to be specially coded to support the Rift in order to look right. So there is not a whole lot of support at this point. If you are not a developer, then maybe it's better to wait to the consumer version.
Also, don't get the VR920. Its very old and not supported well anymore. The Vuzix Wrap line is more modern and supports side-by-side 3D, which is a lot easier to work with.

Don't waste your time with Vuzix crap.
For VR, get a Rift (dev version if you want one now).
For watching movies, get a HMZ-T1 or HMZ-T2.

So what exactly is it that makes the Vuzix glasses so bad?

Low FOV, lenses/screens aren't great, and resolution is crap.
There are reviews of some of them up here on MTBS. CyberReality did a review of the Wrap not too long ago.
I wouldn't waste your time personally...
