Household Objects to enhance the Oculus Experience.

Most of us either have access to a desk-fan or could get one for a cheap enough price, it might add some depth to open cockpit flight simulators (or might just be gimmicky). I wonder how hard it would be to rig up a desk fan so that the rpm of the rotor is linked to in-game airspeed?

What other household items could add to the immersion of the Rift? Heater for desert games? Max out the air-con to play in the arctic? Or even just sit outside in winter to play Metro 2033?

I was thinking of this as well where you could hook up a space heater or AC (do these in portable forms exist?) as well as humidifiers on some sort of control that can be hooked up to a computer to feel more like you are in the environment

I think fans would be cool. They use those at some motion rides (ie XD Theater) and it helps.

For fans maybe you could get some amBX equipment. Game support is pretty small. Of course you would only want the fan setup.

Check out, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvjkhkHkBes.

Not exactly in every household, but I would love to play me some VR skyrim in a walk in freezer. Right up until I forget I'm in a game and die of exposure.

Thats funny, I totally make my room colder when I play Skyrim on my 3DVision/Beamer setup.

I think a heat lamp would be great for simulating the sun.

if you have a sauna, it would be nice to play a game like crysis.
Or just pouring some sand into the garden or the living room  , putting on the rift and laying down onto carribean beach.

Good idea but it would be too expensive to heat up or cool down an entire room. if u build a small chamber and insulate it
very good it would be an option.
Simulating fires would also be nice. But therefore you would need to have some fireproof clothes on. :?

How about a neck mounted device similar to http://www.sharperimage.com/si/view/pro ... tem/100849 but rather than a simple evaporative cooler use a USB powered heater and peltier cooler and give the game control of the thermostat.

The simpler would be to use an USB fan, so that we can control the voltage...

What about when weasels rip your flesh in a zombie game?

Do you hire bankers to come to your house? And do ..things..to you?

Better to keep running from those zombies! The Incentive of not wanting to know - Actual fear....
Intelligence... is not inherent - it is a point in understanding. Q: When does a fire become self sustaining?

I tend to find these kinds of suggestions silly, particularly because we haven't yet solved the basic problem of sussing out the really good input schemes. Maybe this is a good line of thinking to pursue for arcade use, but I tend to think arcades for VR are dead on arrival no matter how compelling the experience may be. We can worry about total immersion after we sort out how to navigate VR spaces intuitively, IMO - doing it first will only hurt VR by making it look gimmicky.
