Anyone going to SXSW or IEEE?

Post by JanVR »

Is anyone going to SXSW in Austin (gaming expo is March 8-10) or the IEEE VR conference in Orlando (March 16-20)?

The SXSW gaming expo is free, which is great (although not sure if Oculus will be part of the gaming expo or part of the main trade show?). IEEE VR looks very interesting, but seems to cost $900... Has anyone ever been to IEEE and is it worth it?

It is worth it if you are a serious VR researcher or company that has things to show off. You can read the papers online afterwards. I don't think that most people (Or even VR enthusiasts) would want to pay $900 to go.

A paper about the WizDish won best technote award at IEEE 3DUI in 2010. The peer review and acceptance criteria were extremely tough.
Professor Steed of University College London presented the paper for which Dr. David Swapp was the first author. A video from one of the trials can be seen here:

Thanks, Flassan. That video actually looks really good!

Palmer, will Oculus be at the SXSW gaming expo, or at the main trade show (or just doing the panel)? Nice to see that they named their events center after you :)

I will be at GDC2013 (March 25-29th) YEI has a booth this year and I will be demoing our current stuff and can answer some questions in person.

I will be going to PAX East, and likely PAX Prime. Not as a representative of YEI but as a nerd who likes gaming :p.
I might bring a sensor or two but unless you tell me in advance I'm not planning on showing anything.

March is going to be a very busy month for me.

(Edit) I will likely going to ECGC as a personal trip too, I have not confirmed with one yet.

Considering dropping by the SXSW gaming expo this weekend - PalmerTech will Oculus being giving hands on demos of the Rift, or just speaking at the panel (Fri at 6pm)?

Great news for those not in Austin: we’re livestreaming the SXSW panel tomorrow on the future of VR gaming with the help of the Verge!

Virtual Reality: The Holy Grail of Gaming
Paul Bettner, Chris Roberts, Cliff Bleszinski, and Palmer Luckey
6:00 – 6:45pm CST this Friday, March 8th

You can read the full panel details here.

We don’t have the official details for accessing the livestream yet, but we’ll be sure to share a direct link with everyone before the panel begins.
Dinner time on "International Woman's Day"? Who's bright idea was that? That is one of the most important holidays in many (non-American) cultures, and those of us with Russian girlfriends or wives will have furious hell to pay if we are not sitting in a restaurant when this livestream event is in progress?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Women%27s_Day wrote:Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day.
I sure hope I can download this livestream it and watch it immediately after I get back from my manly duty on this auspicious international holiday. Blowing off something more important than Valentine's Day and Mother's Day COMBINED is not a wise move for those who should know better...

Didn't realize there was a new blog update, thanks for the heads up.

Also, to answer my own question, the answer is "probably yes", at least according to this article:

Luckily for you, the VR panel is part of the Gaming Expo, which is free and open to the public, and the folks from Oculus Rift will have prototypes in tow for attendees to try out before and after the talk.
