OLD SCHOOL 8800/9800 Card???

Post by The_Nephilim »

Hi, I had looked for the old post showing how to get the 8800 working with an old school solution like I still use.. I currently use 2 7950 with the 162.50 drivers..

Now I was wondering since we know have the mod for the 162.50 drivers so we can enable Stereo I was wondering If I got a 8800/9800 card would I be able to use it for S3D??

If not WHY NOT?? I thought the main reason the 8800's didnt work was there where NO Drivers for it. but now since we have the reg mod to enable Stereo it should work YES???

I don't believe the 8800 GTS (G92) will work, only the 8800 GTX (G80). I am not sure why exactly that is but something about the driver support splits when those new chips came out. I have never tried this myself though, so maybe it could work. I just don't think anyone has got it working though.

OK IF I bought a 8800GTX Would it be possible for it to work?? I dont see why it will NOT?? I thought it was just the drivers that made 3D Possible or had a big part and since they had no Stereo support in the newer drivers until we found that mod it sgould work??

Anyone know for sure??

Well here is the old post you are talking about on how to get the 8800 GTX working:
http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=105&t=1072" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

However this guy seems to think that the 8800 GT works without any crazy hacking:

Hi Nephilim,

I have an 8800GTS 640MB card and have had some success with it and nvidia drivers but it's just a little too quirky for me. I don't remember all that much but I would use nHancer with the AA tweaks and I tried it with Tombraider Legend and it would have some weirdness on the screen and then if I changed the game's AA setting, the weirdness might go away or not. I could just keep changing those settings until it went away so it's not that you need a certain AA setting. It's just that it could turn out good with either AA on or off so it was kind of random. The answer for me was to upgrade my CPU to 3.2GHz and use iZ3D's driver although I haven't used it much with that game. Currently I'm testing older games with my 7800GTX and am pretty happy with it. From what I remember, if you want to use nHancer, then your choice of driver might be a little limited as it seems some versions of nHancer work better with certain versions of video card drivers.

Bottom Line: it was just too quirky for me. It did work nicely though once I did get it working. I don't remember if I needed to toggle AA modes each time I restarted the game in order to get it to work.

I'm pretty sure the 8800GTS 640MB card uses a slightly different GPU than the other 8800GTS's.

I guess you tried laptopvideo2go? :
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/58" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's the closest I could find. It's not the stereo driver though if that's what you're looking for. It seems they don't have any stereo drivers at laptopvideo2go. I guess you already tried 3dguru.com. They don't have it either and it looks like old-school winXP stereo drivers max out with 162.50.

--- iondrive ---

PS: without nHancer, you get lots of artifacts all over the screen. I think the glasses still get triggered though although I could be wrong about that and you would have to use ED-Activator.

THNX for the link looks like they didnt have the drivers but the bad news looks like they would have been for Vista ONLY!!

Also you would need to use the GTX version of the 8800 to get it working according to the one post NOT The GTS or GT's ;)

I'm sorry, it looks like the guy with the 167.63 drivers was actually using the Vuzix stereo drivers with the VR920, not the Nvidia drivers. So I think the first link with the 8800 GTX is the only one to have been confirmed to work.

I still think there's some success with the GTS's. It's the GPU that matters.

From "The_Doctor" halfway down this page:
http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpbb/viewtopic.p ... 2&start=60" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
it seems only g80 based cards work, 8800 gtx, 8800 gts (the old one with 320 and 640 mb ram), 8800 ultra

This only works for shutterglasses as well i think. I have an 8800gtx but when tryign to run in "dual vga"-mode both projectors started "shuttering". Since they're old lcd's i of course didn't get any stereo at all.

so I am wondering would it be worth getting an 8800GTX to try this Out and see If it will work on my system?

If I did this would there be a big improvement over myu 7950GT??

Assuming everything works there should be an improvement. I am looking at some benchmarks and it looks like the 8800GTX is anywhere from 50% to 100% faster than a 7950GT, for example in F.E.A.R.:

Image
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/413/10/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or in HL2 just one 8800GTX will beat your 7950GTs in SLI:
Image
http://techreport.com/articles.x/11211/13" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Especially if you are running SLI you should notice the difference. Whether that difference is worth the cost and the trouble is up to you. But its certainly a better card.

WOW with FEAR there is a Big Difference.. I am looking to improve ArmA2 and FC2 and OFP:DR.. I also play some older Flight sims which dont need the new stuff but the New Games I play would seem to be a Big Improvement with the 8800GTX over the 7950..

OK I wanted to find out about an Intel C2D the E8600. There has been some reports of getting the AMD Dual cores working but what about intels Dual Core chips??

I dont mind getting the upgrade if it will work I just fear that for some wierd reason it won't work and I will be out some bucks.. I just wish there was a definite answer and YES being it..

I will look around for some 8800GTX's on ebay even tho I said I would not buy any more electronic stuff off of Ebay . ;)

Hey, nice of you to post the benchmarks cyber.

It looks like the 8800GTX would help me with some borderline games like Batman Arkham Asylum. I can barely play it in BLC shutterglass mode without losing sync but that's with iZ3D's driver. It's actually fine until I enter a long room and look into the distance. That's when fps goes under 30. I guess the answer is... don't look into the distance. :)

Any comments on PhysX? I find things run faster if I let the CPU handle it rather than the 8800GTS.

Personally I like PhysX but I don't think many games have really taken advantage of it. I used to have a PhysX PPU in my system but Nvidia doesn't support them anymore. Now I use the GTX 285 and I find its powerful enough to handle the PhysX. Not sure if an 8800GTS has enough power to run a game and PhysX at the same time. So thats probably why you would see slowdown, especially in a demanding game like Batman:AA. To be honest though, PhysX rarely adds more than a little eye-candy to games so if you are strapped for performance I would say just disable it.

I just got the confirmation Email that the Vid Card and CPU have shipped Yahoo!! Now I hope I get them Saturday so that will give me the rest of the weekend to Configure and OC the CPU and Vid Card..

Now I will be getting the Swiftech Watercooled system next month to finish out this side Project and then on to my Main Project.. The Triple Projector Setup..

All I need for the TH2Go Setup is a bulb and the TH2Go Gizmo so in about 3 months I should be Triple Screen gaming with 3 Projectors and a screen @ 9ft wide.. ;)

I don't know if it is the same for projectors, but I had my old CRT working with shutters using winxp, 165.50 and 8800gtx.

The display must not be detected and be listed as CRT, so the pin must be bent. Then select DDC VGA at the stereo panel. From this point you should have shutters output but with nasty artifacts all around. Now is when you use nHancer as described at the forum to take rid of those artifacts.
OpenGL does not work with the 8800gtx (I'm keeping a 7900gtx for opengl) and FSX is very unstable and crashes easily.

I managed to get my 8800gtx working with a philips crt and e-d glasses (ddc-vga-glasses option). However other modes are flawed. Trying dual vga made my projectors flickering like trying to run them with shutterglasses (they are lcd's). The oblivion mode is to get rid of some of the black square artifacts i think but stereo worked for me by just using vga-to-tv adapters (replaces edid with their own, vga-to-tv boxes hereby seems acceptable for nvidia together with shutterglasses... o.O ). It's almost the same thing as bending the pin.

Well some games sort of worked but MOSt did NOT.. I would get weird artifacts like it was a bad vid card or the Stereo didnt enable..

I play a few Older titles and they did NOT work at all. 1 Game Janes F-18 would just go Blank but I could still see the HUD Numbers??

GOOD NEWS IS that the Core 2 Duo worked fine except a Glide wrapper game I still paly but will work on getting that all fixed. it just may be a Driver issue with the wrapper as I am using the 162.50 drivers..

YES C2DUO For the WIN cant Wat till I start OC this thing. ;) :)

Well I ran Orthos for about 1.5 hours and it was doing well. I will run it for a longer timne tomorrow, dont trust letting that run all night???

I am currently aty 4.375GHZ I had thought I should get another 300-400mhz out of water cooling..This is Cool. but I did have a slight scare and thought I fried the CPU turned out I just had to remove the Battery to clear CMOS and it then booted right up Whewww!!!!

Well the 7900GTX is definitely better than the 7950GT but not by a huge margin. You can expect anywhere from 10-20% better performance. Not a huge jump but its better than nothing.

Yes Even a Slight Improvement at this point would be good.. Plus I plan on Watercooling the vid card so that will keep it cool when I OC it.. ;)
