Is Resident Evil Revelations the next must-own 3DS game?

By Jeff Bakalar and Scott Stein

It's been nearly a year since Nintendo released the 3DS, but there's yet to be a game targeted specifically at older gamers. Does Resident Evil: Revelations fit the M-rated gaming 3DS void or leave zombie-deprived gamers wanting more?

Hi,

Resident Evil is a classic game and 3DS owners should be thankful this game came out.

It not only demonstrates the quality that is possible from the 3DS but it also shows some of the shortcomings too.

The tempo of RE Revelations is necessarily a bit slower than the totally shoot-em-up RE Mercenaries, in order to add to the suspense and unpredictability of the game flow.

I remember in one tense scene where my partner came into view and I blasted him with the shotgun.

The game graphics are very good, but the video cut-scenes are in another class. Makes you wish all game play looked so well rendered.

The Circle Pad Pro option is really something else. It looks like a mutation from the game. Surprisingly it is compact and light and the second circle pad takes some getting used to, but works well. However I still find it tricky to get the right thumb across to the touch screen. Maybe there is a work around to changing and reloading weapons in critical situations ...

I find the lower touch display is sometimes too bright and this spoils the dark moodiness of the game play on the upper 3D screen.

One generally under-rated feature of the 3DS are the speakers and in-game audio effects. This makes a big difference to the presence of the game and it adds greatly to the immersion.

The main thing that needs to be worked on in the hardware is a bigger screen with a wider viewing angle, as the game just wants to bust out of the screen.

Other notable gripes are the need for textured buttons for grip and for differentiation in the dark, and a second integrated circle pad.

Thanks.
