Vintage Stereo 3D: Pete Smith's Audioscopiks

Post by cybereality »

I just stumbled upon a little piece of stereoscopic history: Pete Smith's Audioscopiks, a short film from 1936 that was produced in stereo 3d and shown in anaglyph. Supposedly it was a big success at the time and was actually the first 3D film to be nominated for an Academy Award. Unfortunately the 3D effects are not very well done (too much separation, incorrect convergence) so its not all that impressive. There was one shot that had some depth, but I had trouble focusing most of the time. Still, an interesting experiment for 70 years ago.

wow just goes to show how long ago anaglyph glasses were invented

"this dame.. err. lady" - wow that's the weirdest example turn of the century self censorship if I ever saw one

also be sure to flip your anaglyph glasses as it's the reverse of what's standard today.

Well anaglyph was supposedly created in 1853, quite a long time ago and not that long after the the stereoscope was invented in 1840. However I cannot seem to find any detail on the original process or a single anaglyph image from that period. Still interesting to think about.
