Dual-Lense Video Drone + Oculus Rift = Become a bird

Post by SC5 »

Just had this idea of attaching the Oculus Rift to one of these: http://ardrone2.parrot.com/, enabling me to literally have a bird's eye view of my neighborhood. Of course this would take a modification of the drone for it to have two cameras to give me depth of field. Anyone ever heard of anyone working on this?

Yes, Parrot themselves : http://blog.parrot.com/2014/05/15/parro ... ulus-rift/

Only a single camera, so no stereoscopy, but at these distances stereopsis is no longer a major depth cue.

Great, thanks. You mean at a large distance having two 'eyes' isn't that useful for depth perception?

Yes. It is however possible to have a good stereoeffect at larger distances but then the cameras needs to be mounted with a higher stereobase. Look up the term hyperstereo. If this is practical in a drone where weight needs to be kept down is another thing.

Yes, from the research litterature it seems after ~65m stereopsis doesn't matter much. I don't know at which distance from the ground a Parrot is generally supposed to fly though.

It would produce a doll-house effect (everything would like tiny) but the effect could be interesting.

Check out the Transporter3D and 3D-cam FPV over at http://emrlabs.ca/shop/

DK2 may not be supported yet, but they're probably working on it.
