Another DIY HMD (old name: Please analyze this video))

Post by deggial »

Hello mates

I just finished working on my DIY HMD and I tried some titles with it. I recorded a video of AMS (Reiza). The lens distortion is almost non-existent but it's the best for my HMD (so far), but since every single video upload I saw has a Rift-like distorsion, maybe I'm seeing things wrong now.

Please take a look at this video and share your opinions

https://youtu.be/_2KFPEU0NOc

The HMD was originally made for phones and it's probably not the best. Tridef made it stereoscopic and I used the VR shader (native) made by a nice guy from around here. The head tracking is done with Freetrack using the 2DOF method of 1 single IrLED. The screen is an 1080p 6" TFT I bought from Alibaba.

If anyone interested, I will add the pics I made during construction.

Any opinion/ advice would be helpful. This HMD is the only one I have tried so far.
Thank you.

edit (25-03-2016):

the hardware/software components:

display: Topfoison 1080p with TC358870 HDMItoMIPI driver board http://www.aliexpress.com/item/DIY-VR-1 ... 21437.html priced at ~212EUR + customs
case: E-Boda Avatar 3D (romanian brand, probably produced somewhere in Asia) with aspherical lenses http://e-boda.ro/video/ochelari-realita ... r-alb.html - priced at ~68 Eur
S3D for gaming: Tridef 3D Ignition
Lens Correction: SweetFX shader http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=120&t=21174

Cool. Do you have any photos of the device itself?

Thank you mate.
I kept tuning and I think I reached a certain immersion level, since I almost sh** my pants loosing control of a virtual F1 at ~300km/h, ending smashed into a wall.

VR needs a lot of patience and trial&failure but, even with 2DOF tracking, the result can be phenomenal. I waited years and years to have the time and resources to build such a toy.

This forum is the best resource for knowledge and you guys are awesome. The true brainstorming is here, not in corporate meetings.

It worths every drop of sweat.

I found out why my VR image is not (so) distorted: my VR case (E-Boda Avatar VR - formerly for phones) is using aspherical lenses and it seems these lenses are doing a pretty good job in canceling the distorsion.

Now, if I may, I will change this thread's title to something like "yet another DIY HMD" or something :)

Yes they are working, assuming you're asking about the graphics driver panel controls

I have a suggestion, why not use two displays instead of one?
The two good headsets, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, both use two screens for each eye.

Anyway, nice job on the HMD! I wish I had enough money to make one.

Thanks :)
Well, the 1080p screen I use was around 250$ which I consider expensive.
Also, placing the perspectives on 2 screens needs serious work.
My screen is seen as a second display.
I am using Tridef for 3D which eats FPS for dinner.

I recently upgraded the headset with Shinecon v2.0 (~25$).
It's overall better than the previous, which had Fresnel lenses.
The Fresnel don't barrel-distort at all, but light pollution is really bad in high contrast scenes.
Shinecon v2 has classic lenses; they distort and have color aberration, but the image (ReShade applied) is crystal clear and the FOV is way better.
