I Need to See Your Rigs!

Post by Neil »

Hi Guys!

I have a whacky idea, but I need to make sure it holds water.

Could our members please post pictures of their VR rigs that go well above and beyond a VR headset. I'm interested in haptics chairs and wild setups - the wilder, the better. Also, please let me know what country you are located in.

Regards,
Neil

Close to 3,000 views on this thread...where are the rigs?

You guys have become like Rocky in the first three quarters of all Rocky movies.

Surely someone out there does more with VR and immersive tech than an HMD and a couple of wands! Where is that inner geek? Let it out! Let's se it!

I7 4790k
GTX 980 Ti
16 GB Ram
HTC VIVE
Play area of 2.1mx 2.1m

No haptic chairs or nothing wild...maybe 1 Steam Controller as a wild example? :P

is this what you were referring?

Thanks for the effort. I'm looking for wild setups beyond the computer and HMD. Something imaginative!

http://www.isrtv.com/forums/topic/3184- ... a-cockpit/

This thread (some pics and videos may no longer be available) describes the building of my friend Remco's "Project 34" Tyrell [simulated auto racing] cockpit based on the Tyrell six-wheeler raced in Formula One from the mid-to-late 70's. Remco is a true "dedicado" and his rig is just about as immersive as it gets, in terms of real layout, wheel, pedals, shifter, and instruments. He DID run it using an overhead projector, although it wouldn't suprise me entirely to see him experimenting today with VR and VR headsets.

Search terms on youtube (and elsewhere): Remco Hitman; McLaren M23 FOV; Niels Heusinkveld (they are both Dutch--Niels is a mechanical engineer by training).

In case anyone wonders, having watched: Yes both guys use shifter and clutch (3 pedal) setups when racing a lot of the time. When not, they probably use paddle or paddle-like stick shifters (see the real cars).

What neither of them has shown up to this point (at least as far as I know) is using these in 3D. Which is where and why I would like to jump back ahead of them again. Beyond that, there isn't much else a human being can do, I don't think, provided he or she can see and use their hands...on wheels or instruments.

So...help me claw my way back up front. :D

Another (historic, and also sim-racing)

This video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjURCM9lkcE

was originally entitled "Chriso Rows it at Rouen." It shows something which could well have been considered a "state-of-the-art" sim-racing cockpit back in the day, and one driven by a truly talented man: Chriso is one "Chris O'Brien," who is still, as far as I know, the one and ONLY driver to ever have raced not only sim cars...but also the REAL deal (Formula 3 and Formula 2) against four men (then) who would later go on to become Formula One World Champions: Chris raced (and lost) to none other than both Niki Lauda and James Hunt (see the film "Rush"), but also Alan Jones, and Jody Scheckter, all four of them. In the UK, back in the early seventies.

He then moved to North America round about '73 or '74...and had the further priveledge (and I'm SURE he would describe it as such) to race against (Formula Atlantic) the "second man who should have been World Champion, but was not" (the first being Sir Stirling Moss, UK). That second man was Gilles VIlleneuve, CAN.

In this video you see ChrisO driving using a homebuilt rig of wood supports, in front of a monitor which is anything but VR...but such is his level of skill and concentration that he can focus in to the point it just doesn't matter.

ChrisO was, the last time I talked to him, also still quite the advocate of driving using a stick, and three pedals rather than two.

He's my hero, in case you haven't already gleaned it. :D

This is the cockpit I made :

The skeleton is made from PVC pipes.
I do not have a VR HMD for the moment, but the 27" LCD screen is 3D vision compatible.
Nothing move but I would like to add vibration transducers if I find a way to put them (not much space under the seat).
The joystick on the right can be changed with a gear stick for car simulation.
