Idea: BASE JUMP Wingsuit simulator for Oculus Rift?

Post by Hornet »

Hi all, I am too waiting...:-(
My idea: Is someone able to build (for start simple) Basejump wingsuit simulator (with Hydra it would be awesome). Something similar as in this movie (from 10:00 min).
I think it isnt so complicated...but I am not programmer :-(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GASFa7rkLtM (best it is from 10. minute)

Thx a lot, I hope....

Or this?

Just support Far Cry 3 and Just Cause 2, I guess ;)

Thanks ,no bad both first video is better, but too complicated..to find the exit in game....better would be simple - choosing exit and jump...with real speed, trees, not more...hope I am not only one fan of wiínsuit simulation.

"Volo AirSport " is the best true flight dynamics & physics associated with a Base Jump.

There's a free version wihthout all the graphics but it shows you how well it performs.

The other G.I Joe style soldier base jump sims are more unrealistic arcade games lacking flight dynamics.

Check Volo AirSport... this guy is really trying to get the proper dynamics happening...

Yeah, I am thinking about building something like this. Well, skydiving, but same concept.

Imo, requires 3 things. Proper binaural sound emulation, one of the best sense of speed when skydiving is the sound of air rushing past your ears. Proper turning with head motion, as a decent amount of sky diving shifts in body position can be done through the head (thinking about having the user lying prone to the floor, but that can get kinda nasty and kinda uncomfortable, also prolly not important on wingsuits). And then a proper game (gets kinda boring to just drop).

That FC3 looks way too slow and stable imo. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

That volo thing looks way better, but obviously the graphics suck.

Volo plays ok, the graphic engine really needs to be updated to have a much higher draw distance for objects on the mountain than it does right now. I did some basic things like flying about 5m off of the slope and trying to go through holes in between two peaks. There are some interesting gamey directions you can use the engine for to make a much more arcade focused game. I like it.

Volo looks interesting +- what I wanted, the autor is too backer for Oculus Rift and is working on Hydra support...this sounds promising really. Thx for link to volo

There's a good wing suit game for Kinect . It works well because you steer with your whole body. That might not translate very well to the rift.

hmm, "SkyDivethegame" is really cute... And it is based on the UE3-Engine.

So how complex is it to add Rift-Support? :)

So far, I like volo. It's definitely more engaging than Skydive due to the more complex controls and it's instability. There are a lot of issues with it tho, like your core, legs, and arms seem to be superhuman metal, as if you were a plane and not a human, and it seems like (although may not be) that you "gain" altitude if you tilt it the proper way. All it needs is a more complex environment and detail so that your sense of speed increases.

The cool thing about the second one is the ability to do flips, I wish I could get it to stay first person perspective when I do that.

Very cool. The video is a bit tough to watch, but I can't wait for the real thing.

Hi All,

Not sure if this thread is still active but giving it a shot anyway.

So far it looks like VOLO Airsport with Oculus Rift is a very good candidate for success!

I personally know a handful of experience proximity wingsuit flyers, very willing to help me out in the movement-realism-field, since the experience itself is too dangerous and time-consuming for most of us to ever reach, yet the thrill of the flight is a must for every thrill-seeker out there.

The goal is to have the following setup:
- Volo Airsport or Skydive Proximity Flight The Game
- Oculus Rift
- Movement tracking (Kinect-type) while lying chest-down on a 2ft by 2ft spring-loaded table, allowing slight tilting and up/down realistic reactive movement as your arms/legs move.
Kinect or alike should be able to detect hands, arms, feet, legs, head and body (as they are all required for perfect wingsuit flying simulation, every part of the body has an influence on the airflow and results in a flight-altering motion - one guy we knew passed away just tilting his head while in a deep gorge, bringing him out of balance sufficiently to hit his shins on some edge-rocks and crash)

So, everyone, all help is welcome.
- I am waiting for my Oculus Dev Kit 2
- The spring-loaded table (possibly I need to hydraulically supported like a car) is under construction
- The software to be determined, although VOLO looks most promising - PC-Based
- The movement-detection compatible with PC/MAC - Does anyone have a good proven product for this part? Most likely going for Kinect for Windows if there is nothing better?

Thanks for help and updates of your progress guys!

Hi,

I am happy that you are interested, and direct contact with real base jumpers is your real advantage. There are two possibilities KINECT like system or this:

http://sixense.com/wireless

I think the STEM will be with the time standard in motion control. The table - too good idea. And ev. some air flow from front...:-) ev. with USB control of flow....

But too clasical razer hydra would be possible to use (for tests minimally)

Hey Hornet,

Thanks for the quick reaction. Looking at STEM as we speak. Looks nice as it covers all "extremities" but I was hoping to end up with a system allowing me to put on a jumpsuit with some markers on hands, feet, head/helmet, shoulders, upper and lower back, upper arms and legs, and butt, in order to get a very accurate tracking. Can Kinect do this that you know of (with or without markers of some sort)?

Airflow would be good indeed ;-)

The table is actually based on an office chair with a modified strut (the ergonomically-shaped seat is actually quite comfortable to chest-down on) allowing it to easily pop up and down as a reaction on the movements of body and limbs, simple thing we came up with, easy to find parts and implementation.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Yanus.
