Galaxy Note 4 "Pixel Density" Pictures with DK1 Lense

Post by Hannibalj2 »

Hello Everyone,

I got my Galaxy Note 4 today. I have been very curious about the screen door effect with the 1440p display.

I have to say that I am very impressed. Yes, you can see pixels, but they are barely noticeable. You will notice them most on flat ares where there aren't much textures. I used some of the lenses of the Oculus DK1 and took pictures from a Android Tuscany Demo. The Demo itself was very buggy, but it was good enough to see the difference from the DK1 in pixel density.

It feels like a texture on a canvas, but all very watchable. I am including images so you can see what I mean.

Edit: I have added pictures of the Bluray Godzilla 2014, scroll down to view them.

Edit: I added more pics. Some are a bit blurry, but on each pack there is at least one that shows accurately the pixels as how you would see them through the DK1 lense.

Cheers ;)

Re: Galaxy Note 4 (Screen Door Effect) Tuscany with DK1 Lens

I downloaded VLC and played the Bluray version of Godzilla on the Note 4. VLC offers different aspect ratios to apply the media, so I chose the "centered" option. That gives very wide black borders around the movie image. I use that as a reference when watching the movie because the app Cinema do not use the entire 5.7 display for when displaying the movie, but only a potion of it.

Godzilla looks great, and although you can see dots from the pentile pixels, they feel almost like film grain when watching a movie. That said, I think now I know how the Crescent Bay is improving over Gear VR.

You see, if the Adeno 420 could handle options to soften the pixels via Anti Aliasing, you can greatly minimize the perceived notion of the screen door. Using the new GTX 980's, this cards have new aliasing abilities and the horsepower, therefore, I am more than certain that may be what Oculus uses to improve the quality visually over the gear VR.

I am now almost certain that Crescent Bay is a 1440p display with GPU filtering in the form of high quality anti-aliasing.

So, I wander if the Adreno could handle some form of Anti-aliasing for apps like Cinema? Regardless of it, as it is now, it looks very good to watch movies or media. The pixels does help on sequences where scenes have textures. The biggest drawback is that on pale color areas it is where the pixels are most noticeable, but not bothersome at all.

Edit: I took pictures with the "B" lens of the DK1 Oculus, for the pictures below. Also note that I used a crappy Iphone 3Gs camera for this, so the color reproduction stinks. The Note 4 colors are top notch, but can not be seen from the pics. This pics are more for a reference of the 1440p display.

1. Godzilla Movie Pictures
2. "Dead Leaves" Anime Pictures

Note: The Anime e movie size source is very small, and even then the resolution managed to very good and comfortable on the eye.

I will try take better pics with a better camera and upload them.

Cheers

Reinforces my conclusion that we need atleast 4K at CV1. else it will still be canvas painting VR not the Matrix.., though matrix will not be there before we cross 8K anyway....

Can you try with aspheric lenses at 5X?
I assume DK1 are 7X Aspheric...Reducing magnification may help on overall performance.

The Pixels will not change with neither A, B, or C options. Actually the quality is very good. You mainly notice the pixel on flat shaded areas.

I think for first Gen, is very good.

We are not getting 4k for CV 1.

My best guess the highest will be 3200x1800 res tops, then extra GPU filtering to diffuse the pixels. But that is been generous. I think mostly likely CV1 will be 1440p, or pixel density display with wider form factor for increasing HFOV

Yes, the Note 4 looks great even if its pentile.
