Confirmed using 75hz video Eliminates judder in LiveViewRift

Post by rowanunderwood »

I feel that this is some very important info for any Developers of VR players or viewers, especially since video may end up being a big chunk of the VR market. I noticed that all of the video players currently available suffer from severe stuttering when you move your head around inside the video. At first I thought this was a limitation of the players, but then I began to suspect the video framerate was the culprit. After testing a 75 hz video I made with fraps and Unreal 2k4 in LiveViewRift I can confirm the experience is 100% silky smooth even when quickly turning your head! Normally I'd make a youtube video to demonstrate this, but with the 30fps cap I'm afraid you'll have to take my word for it :) There is allready tech avilable from http://www.svp-team.com/ to change video framerates in real time with interpolated frames. I'd like to recommend anyone working on VR players take a look at offering compatibility with the SVP project. Thanks!

Update 1:
Somebody has already written up a tutorial for permanent frame rate conversion using SVP's tech :) God I love the internet!

Just came off the Carmack talk, and he mentioned convincing some of the panoramic video folks to shoot at 60fps to match Gear VR's refresh rate, so it sounds like Oculus is aware of this.
