OVR Vision & Oculus Rift

Hi all... Finally my OVR Vision arrived.

What is OVR Vision - it's an accessory created in Japan that slides over the face plate of the Oculus rift allowing augmented reality.
two offset cameras display in realtime the outside world.

I'll update this thread once I test it .. just wanted to mention OVR in case others on the forum have also received their OVRVision

Ok ... so from my initial impression it seems to be a well crafted product... taking into account this was a one man project he's done exceptionally well. The actual housing has been 3D printed. I was a litle worried it may be of low quality printing but no... it's very high quality, you can hardly notice the layering that comes with most 3D printed objects.

It sits well over the Oculus Rift. I downloaded the Unity 3D scene that comes with the OVRVision. I had it up & running in no time.

It looks fine & suffers very little from lag as I look about my office desk.

I plan to use this to experiment with A.R using Unity & Vuforia.

for the price its an absolute gem. I'd highly recommend it to any Oculus User.

More to come shortly, once I settle in & have a good fiddle with it...

note: there's both a Win. & OSX version of the SDK.

Looks like a neat solution and addition.

Could be used for some interesting mixed media VR and AR applications.

One intriguing side effect of solutions like this is caused by the fact that the cameras are set several centimeters in front of your actual eye position. So even if you dial everything in and match the FOV, refresh rate, etc.. there is still this odd feeling that everything is "off". The cameras swing through longer arcs than your eyes so movement feels a bit distorted and you cannot judge distance accurately - particularly when operating with objects within arms length. You have trouble grabbing things because you are so used to your arm length as a metric, but now your arm feels a few centimeters too short. You end up grasping for air quite often when you try to pick small objects up quickly.

The way to fix it is to mount the cameras above or below the headset and use a mirror to project the image into the lens. This extends the distance of the traveling light just enough so that it matches the distance that light would have traveled had it entered your eye.

You are a lucky guy - my OVR-Vision arrived 2 weeks ago in Frankfurt and i'm still waiting for it.
Did you payed any taxes ?

@ Brantlew ... I sorta enjoy the very subtle "disjointedness " of it.. makes you del somewhat detached but you know they are your hands out there.. simply rotating your hands, viewing them in 640 rez is interesting... I feel somewhat like a cyborg peering at what is left of the original self. I could imagine this in a futuristic battle game where my soldiers exoskeleton has been peeled back to reveal my inner flesh ;)

@ FR3D no Tax paid here. just turned up on my doorstep in Brisbane Australia.

I'm hoping to develop Unity3D games as I have Unity Pro. Vuforia A.R is what I'm used to using for AR apps on iOS. I spoke with the developer of OVRVision last night.. he used Metaio SDK.

Haven't had time to explore the OVR much lately ( work commitments ) but hope over coming weeks to settle into it.

pity the cameras are only 640 rez.. the upcoming O.R dev. kit 2 would be neat with this..

This is very interesting! I'm looking forward to the feedbacks of people trying this thing!

How about Linux support by the way?

As for the low rez, I don't see a real problem since the point for me is to get the position of objects and thanks to that, let the computer know where your hands, keyboard, mouse are in the virtual environment (for augmented reality it could be a problem but it's not the real target here I think)
