i know notch it mostly working on his space game but hopefully he requests minecraft support for rift from the people actually working on that now. i'm still annoyed the only stereoscopic mode is anaglyph thus far.

Hopefully they haven't been told not too, by the Oculus guys.

Because if one of the made in china then should be 7'' screen right? so that would be awsome to read anynews about that model!! unless Oculus have requested not to talk about until they show it in GDC.

btw: I JUST HAVE ORDERED MINE!!!!
Then I was right :P !!

Super exciting news. Minecraft, though built on hype, is one of my favorite games for several key design choices, and undoubtedly one of the best games to use the new level of immersion and scale of the Rift.

Doesn't look like a video has been posted in the last 7 hours, and I happened to find a photograph of Notch and Mojang cofounder Jakob Porser wearing the 7inch devkits, no big surprise there. The photo was taken down, but still hanging around caches I guess, out of respect for whatever reason it was taken down I won't post it. Just some nerds in goggles anyway. :woot

I wonder if the NYT article right after IndieCade the night before Notch gets his Rift is just good timing. Oculus sure is spreading word of mouth across the globe full scale these days.

My brain won't be able to take it as these kits contiune to arrive, one by one until mine in late April.

In unrelated indie news, Polytron the love-'em-or-hate-'em guys who made Fez for the Xbox were talking about how games need to get away from rules, systems and boardgames and more into living worlds, confirmed to have ordered a Rift. More recently they've been complaining about dev kit appearance: "it's going to be the first real mass market VR headset! it needs to SCREAM futurism. it's something you wear, it needs to be more stylish!" and "but regardless of what the final product looks like, we've never been this excited about anything ever."

As far as i'm aware, he said that both games will get Rift support even if (and this was quoted by palmer many times) he hast to write the support for java himself. :)
Some side Info: Notch is no longer involved in developing Minecraft it's Jens Bergsteins (@jeb_) job now.

Too bad Oculus hasn't released an SDK. The hardware wouldn't be any use at this point.
Unless they're giving out the SDK to each person only when there's a physical devkit manufactured for them, which seems a bit pointless, when we could all have the SDK right now.

Notch has said that 0x10c will definitely support it, but that Minecraft support will ultimately be up to Jeb (I don't think he'll have a hard time convincing him, though).

Also, they posted an image that they then took down... I'll just, uh, leave this reddit thread here:

I'm sure Oculus isn't giving out kits to those few special, high profile dev teams and then giving them no support - that'd be bonkers! Those dev teams will be getting assistance and guidance, and I'm sure they'll be getting an "pre-release" version of the SDK. And that's what it will be - an SDK that isn't 100% done yet (though at this point I'd hazard a guess that Oculus is probably at the stage of adding spit and polish; clearing up demos and documentation etc). And perhaps those lucky dev teams will be giving their input to help improve the SDK, too!

They wouldn't withhold the SDK from a ravenous community without good reason, but making sure it's good and ready is more than understandable.

I wonder if they are 'first 40' pilot run rifts or from the first shipment from China?

Was going to post exactly that, then thought 'naah, why would they be in the wild? is "she" Jane from Tarzan?'.

Good stuff though ;)

In all seriousness it is great to see the new devkits somewhere other than Oculus HQ or the factory.

Where is the head-strap?

I think that its just the angle of the photo hiding the top-strap, and that you can just about see the end of Notch's one.

Oculus said it was optional, so they have probably not mounted it.

Unless those are wireless control boxes with internal battery, preloaded with a factory VR demo, what are they looking at that deserves the jaw dropping response?

You seem to have difficulty understanding certain types of humor.

edit: On topic, I noticed how small the control box is, and it looks like the cable is a decent length. Cool.

Obviously! In fact, I actually had added "Posers!" to the post, but then I deleted it as being somewhat rude, before pressing "Submit".
jf031 wrote:You seem to have difficulty understanding certain types of humor.
Your claim lacks merit, and in fact is more rude than if I *had* called them posers. I do indeed have a dry sense of humor (which you obviously missed). My post was meant as subtle satire (a high form of humor), while pointing out the dropped jaw that some may have missed.

Would you claim such a thing if I had used "low humor" (i.e. adolescent fart jokes)?

Bravo! You recognize "high minded humor". ;)

Of course, "low brow humor" (slapstick, and adolescent fart jokes) appeal to a much wider audience.

EDIT: Now what is REALLY important here: What is that T-Shirt logo that looks like a "flaming chipmunk"?

I found the idea of a rift with wireless control box, battery, and internal hard drive quite humorous myself.

I am jealous and excited all at once! It's almost here, guys :D :D :D

BTW, are there some certification markings on the control box?

Is it wrong that what excites me most about this development is not that they've got their Rifts already, but that the tweet and picture were very hastily removed?

*ponder ponder ponder*
*wild speculation*

It has an FCC mark for the US, but can't make out the others.

Edit:
Optimistically the middle 3 symbols are:

FCc / Australian 'C tick'/ CE
