Those are some slick little lenses. I love the magnetic clips

A noob question here
If I mount 2 normal webcams on top of oculus rift (or any other hmd)
each of the webcam distance is fixed (by trial and error)
each of the webcam output is feed to each of the hmd lens (like side by side 3D)
Will I get side by side 3D immediately? Will it works?
I don't need high quality 3D, I just want to know whether it will at least give me a basic 3D view

sure you will but in the rifts case it's better to have one camera fed by two separate lens instead, since it uses one screen. this also eliminates problems with frames being out of sync and any auto adjustments and/or camera shake apply to both views.

The low cost solution would be to try a Minoru 3D Webcam ($39.95 on Amazon), the separation is quite nice (6cm) and it should be able to produce side-by-side output, although at a lower resolution (640x480 vs 640x800) and frequency (30fps vs 60Hz) than the Rift's display. You would need some wide angle or fisheye lenses to produce an output compatible with the Rift though.

You can't quite feed it directly, you would have to adjust the warping and maybe the FOV, and use less of the inside side of each camera image and more of the outside side (it's not 100% overlap). But it would work.

A side effect would be increased self-confidence.

ok, this thread did it. long time lurker. but joined the forum and i'm ordering a dev kit rift. pair this up with binaural audio recording, and the possibilities are endless. oh ... and bring on the porn!

Naming yourself strangedays? You didn't already have that idea? My mind reading skills are weak.

Be careful what you wish for, or maybe you will see you could do with a 30 kg adjustment yourself.

I just received my wide angle fish eye lenses, here is how they look like on my HTC Evo 3D :
DSC00019.JPG
I had to put the (included) adhesive metal rings on the objectives so the fish eye lenses could stick magnetically. Easy to put them on, easy to remove, nice. :) But it can take some time to align them perfectly with the objectives, it'll be faster with some more practice I guess.

I'd say the horizontal FOV is a little bit less than 180°, no idea for the vertical FOV though. But still a lot more than without the lenses for sure... :P

Here are 2 images from a single 3D shot with a fish eye lens on the right objective, obviously from the exact same position :

IMAG0010.v1.jpg
I'll probably post a video this week-end to show what to expect with real footage, not enough light and nothing interesting to film tonight.

Awesome Fredz! Those lenses look well worth it.

Do you know if they will work on the Fujifilm W3? I'm guessing no, but I figured I'd ask.

Not sure it would fit on the Fuji W3, there seems to be two main constraints : aperture size and distance from the objective.

The aperture size needs to be less than 1cm to maximize the FOV with the lenses I got, ideally less than 9.5mm to have the whole 180° view. I don't know the aperture size of the W3 but it seems quite small, so that could work. You could try measuring it to be sure.

The distance from the objective should be small, that's the case on most mobile phones (like the HTC Evo 3D) or very compact cameras (like the Sony Bloggie 3D). But by looking at pictures of the Fuji W3 it seems the distance is a bit bigger than on those, so I'm not sure you would have a wide FOV. Probably not the whole 180°, but maybe enough for the 90-110° needed on the Rift though.

I'd say at $6 for one lens you don't take a big risk, so you could have a try. If you want to be more safe you can also try with lenses designed for bigger apertures like these ones :

13mm ($12.59)

15.8mm-25mm diameter ($13.99)

Forgot to say that you shouldn't buy these lenses if you want to use them on a Sony Bloggie 3D. Its interaxial is too small (2cm), so it's not possible to put the lenses side-by-side on the objectives. :(

I wanted to do a 2cm to 6.5cm mod on mine anyway, but for now the HTC Evo 3D will do.
