Mind Reading Cap almost here

Post by colocolo »

Mary Lou Jepsen, head of the display division at OVR, claims that it would be possible to develop a high resolution mind reading cap with the help of consumer electronics, like LCD and CMOS image sensors.....
Just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That means that i could imagine a cup of tea which would be recognized by the mind reading in cap and which could be displayed by
Magic Leap holographic display??? That holographic image would again be present in my visual cortex, could be read out again by the mind reading cap...... A pos feeback loop? An amplification of my mental images? Green lantern style?

"almost here" seems to be overstating it.
"There may be a feasible path to get to it" is probably more apt.

@colocolo: We were discussing this here back in 2012 (in YOUR thread, no less) before she (Mary Lou Jepsen) worked at Oculus VR:
http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.p ... 82#p126216

There are also a lot of interesting related links where this was discussed in another thread:
http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.p ... 82#p104102

There have been HUGE advancements since then, but the "mind reading cap" seems almost as far away now as in 2012, unless there is some new news that I missed.

My concern with all these things is something called "maladaptive neuroplasticity" that could adversely affect folks who spend too much time in the "out of body" experience that these technologies can provide (as related to spending large amounts of time in VR). [Neuroplasticity is the ability of the central nervous system to induce functional and microstructural changes in order to adapt to a new environment, but maladaptive neuroplasticity can also bring disadvantages, such as reduced inhibition of input signals (suspected to cause chronic pain such as migraines, phantom limb pain, tinnitis/ringing ears, and post-stroke compensatory adaptation preventing full recovery. In VR, it could cause permanent adaptation to VR-space while real-world adaptation atrophies over time, unless we maintain a balance with time spent in the real natural world.

EDIT: Weird... I have been misreading your name as "cocoloco" all these years. I only just now noticed the switched consonants. Hmm...

I have chosen the term 'almost here' for a specific reason. At least i think so. XD
IMO knowing how to get somewhere, as so eloquently described by Mystify, can be considered as almost here.
Mary Lou Jepsen seems to be very confident in what she is able to do with her knowledge.
As so often proved in the history of science it might be only just a matter of engineering in order to get to the other side of the river.
Of course 'almost here' is not really precisely defined so you could also think of something like 10 years. Depends on how you
right now feel about this term. I felt 10 years.
The discussion from 2012 only defined a very vague path to that goal.
The reasoning from Mary Lou Jepsen seems to have much more flesh to it.
Another thing is how well you define the functioning of the cap. Are we talking of only reading out faint manifestations of the mind like in the video shown above or would it be a HD picture of your mind.
Anyways .....considering the significance this new invention would bring us i wouldn't say that i have overstated it in any way.

Hmm...
Apparently, VR is already disbalancing your mind. Do sth about it!
coco loco..... you know that coco in spanish sometimes is referred colloquially to 'head' (coco = coconut) and loco means crazy?
