Game project idea

Post by Dom »

Hello, I have a few questions about starting a video game with Unreal Engine 4

So, I was wondering what kind of system requirements are supported for windows os hardware, I googled but I could not find the right answer.
Maybe something like quad core, 8 gigs ram, gtx 460 or amd 6750. This would be okay for me.

I guess inside the Unreal Engine editor it depends on the "models" and map layouts for "fps" and getting a firepro or quadro card it best.
So do I need "3d studio max" to make models then import them to Unreal Engine, or can I do all of that inside the Unreal editor?

One last question, is it worth it to start making a game with Unreal Engine 4 learning from start, like I have not even registered a copy of it yet and I am wondering if it might be to difficult and then I would just quit and uninstall it.
- I have done some 3d modeling before and used to have blender installed and could load some models I downloaded and I have used editors from Magix music maker. I mostly have experience now with networking and troubleshooting and most often I need pointers or teaching lessons to learn new programs and it seems Unreal Engine is pretty complicated.

According to the Epic website, these are the requirements:
What are Unreal Engine 4's system requirements?
For developing with UE4, we recommend a desktop PC with Windows 7 64-bit or a Mac with Mac OS X 10.9.2 or later, 8 GB RAM and a quad-core Intel or AMD processor, and a DX11 compatible video card. UE4 will run on desktops and laptops below these recommendations, but performance may be limited.
Though you can do some simple map making inside Unreal, you really want to be creating assets in a real 3d package.

Typically you would need a 3d package that can export to FBX, which 3ds Max and Maya do well. Some people use Blender, but I believe the support for FBX is not as good.

You DO NOT need a professional video card to do 3d modeling. They will work fine on consumer graphics cards.

Yes, UE4 is a great engine and I am using it myself. I think it's the best time ever to learn about game development, so give it a shot.

Thanks for the correct information Cybereality

I think I am gonna keep Unreal Engine game development on my high list. I'm gonna prepare to get all the packages installed and set some time to learn the programs.

I found this video for use with blender, 3ds max and maya would be ideal though.

So I have spent most of the last two nights learning how to make a cup in Blender and basically just getting used to the function like transforming a cylinder into a round cup by extruding, resizing the wireframe then giving it a material layer.

It takes a good 2.5 minutes to render a 250% quality picture and the tutorial I was viewing said 1000% was supreme.
This is a 3d pic I took of the cup I made. I used this plugin: http://www.noeol.de/s3d/

added this, looks better in 3d
