My full experiences with HMDs and 3d video glasses

Post by Radioboy86 »

Hey guys my name is Jonathan and I constantly find myself going to this site to pull from the many opinions & info. Cybereality seems to be in 99% of all topics lol. I guess Its been about 1 year now and I have plowed through many ebay purchases. Most items I sadly returned as they were not as good as I hoped. Some items turned out to be really great suprises! I will say that the market for video glasses and hmds is not very well understood. There seems to be many poor qaulity items that give the market trouble. Mr. Palmer Lucky really did do some awesome things here. The Oculus was something I just stumbled onto and I had only looked for these hmds for travel and portable TV/Monitor usage. I started my 3D obsession with the interest in Nvidia 3dtv play/3d vision. I bought a projector and tried Skyrim... I was hooked. I played Bioshock and that was it... I was a 3d guy from that point on. I always have been intrigued with just throwing a pair of video glasses/hmd in a bad with my Nvidia shield and doing some emulation or gaming on the go.

These glasses/hmds below mainly were bought for that purpose. I did try a few semi-VR headsets like the emagin and Sony HMZ series but the projector screen just cannot be outdone in size and feeling of scope. The Rift is really the only thing that evem offers a NEW experience VS 3D Projectors. I would say the projector is like a really big hologram and the RIFT is like... Being there... in the shoes of the character. I hope to get some great opinions here and learn more. maybe even trade some gear with fellow collectors. I hope this list and breakdown will help whoever is looking and in the market. I only provide my opinion and will just be honest based on my experience and the model I happened to have my hands on. I will update this as more info and resources are available to help share my findings with the community! Thanks!

First off I will show you guys were I came from in comparing this tech to what I have owned and tried.

- Owned a LG 55" Passive 3D TV : 3D was decent/Picture was good/Passive 3D was full of lines and low detail : SENT IT BACK $1100

http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-55LA7400-led-tv

- Owned a Viewsonic HD 1080p 3D Projector : 3D was amazing/Picture was amazing/Loud fan noise/Color was not good : SENT IT BACK $600

http://www.viewsonic.com/us/pjd7820hd.html

- Owned a LG PB60G 3D LED Projector : 120Hz/3D at XGA+WXGA/Super small pico size! : Sold it on ebay "120Hz doesnt fix blur like i thought"

http://www.lg.com/us/home-video/lg-PB60G-micro-portable

- Owned a LG PA75U 3D LED Projector "Still Do" : 3D was amazning/Picture was superb : OWNED "Not selling till it's dimmed out"

http://www.lg.com/us/home-video/lg-PA75 ... -projector

"So you can see I have high standards of what I consider a BIG screen and GOOD 3D"

I have never used 120Hz 3D Page Flipping : I dont know how this format variant looks on HMDs @60Hz. "Flicker?"
I have used SBS(Full)(Half)/T&B/Frame Packed 720p Nvidia : All Decent "I perfer Tridef 1080p T&B"

"On to my HMD/Video Glasses experiences IN ORDER OF DATE OWNED"

*Sony HMZ-T1 : I have big brdiged nose and the edges were blurry : Seemed OK, But FOV is not like PJ screen or 750ft screen as Sony claims.
- SENT IT BACK - I didn't like the breakout box either. NOT portable in the car and more of a at home thing.

http://mellottsvrpage.com/wp-content/up ... -t1-3d.jpg

*Accupix MyBud HMD : Optics suck. Blurry in the middle and made me consider never trying HMDs ever again. Screen was good. FOV was not 35. More 32. The 2D-3D conversion was OK. I would say it was like the Smart HDTV's. The blurry optics and cheap qaulity just ruin it ALL. Accupix seems to be some sort of mini partner company with LG. They both are based in Korea too. I spent a bit on this thing and it was just not worth it. Cool features, bad optics.
- GOT A REFUND AND GOT IT FOR FREE - I ended up breaking it trying to FIX the optics. Now its just parts and a possible DYI project for later lol.

http://www.betanews.net/imagedb/thumb/2 ... 6cba89.jpg

*Vuzix 230 Wrap : Optics were good. Decent features like a OSD and 3D modes and Brigtness/Contrast/Color, etc. FOV 22. This was so tiny for a 4:3 ratio screen. I mean it was cool for the time I had it. I just could not use it for gaming and such. The batteries always died too. it sucked em down!
- SOLD IT WITH ANOTHER PAIR ON EBAY - Do not miss them hope the buyer is enjoying them for the great deal he got!

http://sale.images.woot.com/Vuzix_Wrap_ ... Detail.jpg

*Vuzix 310XL : Optics were decent but the focus was a little off in the contrast of the sides of the screen. It is hard to explain. It had less features but 26 FOV which was bigger than the 230 Model I had. It had Aspect modes and simple image options on the OSD. I noticed a strange scanline effect in the unit when objects moved. Sonic in Green Hill Zone seemed to have a trail of lines? I guess it is decent but avoid the XL model.
- SOLD IT ON EBAY - Hope the buyer enjoys the good deal they got!

http://sale.images.woot.com/Vuzix_Wrap_ ... Detail.jpg

*Carl Ziess Cinemizer Plus "NON-OLED" : The FOV was identical to the VR920's and similar speced VGA hmds. Sadly I never got to really try it. The screen was damaged and I could only make out the lit up area where the screen would be. I could see the size and brightness of the unit. I really felt the FOV was smaller than I had hoped too.
- RETURNED THEM TO SELLER - I would not recommend these. The size is much bigger than the super small vuzix models I mentioned.

http://images.esellerpro.com/2329/I/367/3/zeiss1.jpg

*Vuzix VR920 : Same thing with these. The unit I got was damaged and had a line through the screen pixel grid. I could tell the screen size and brightness. The Cinemizer was way brighter and the screen was more uniform and perfect in 4:3 ration/shape. The fit on these was really bad for me too.
- RETURNED THEM - Never tried headtracker or the VR/3D "Looks decent BUT there is much better support for newer hmds"

http://www.peregrinesalon.com/wp-conten ... _vr920.jpg

*Rimax iVision Glasses NON-VISOR/920K-3D : These are alot like the EVG920V Model hmd I owned. They look very similar but way better build and design. They use the Olympus style earbud brackets and seem to use good KOPIN lcd displays. Oriscape/GVD Models seem to have clones of these models. I felt the fit was OK but not the best. I could make out the screen but once again my unit had damaged lines/pixels. It had no VGA Input just AV-Input. It was 922K 640x480x3.
- RETURNED THEM - They are OK just not worth the huge asking price I commonly see them for. I have seen much better units since this...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31kYbZuvG4L.jpg

*EVG260 : These are the most common video glasses you can find. They come in many different shells and models. They have a 320x240x3 LCD panel and very narrow FOV of around 22-26, some claim 30. These glasses had terrible optics and washed out contrast. screen was a little bigger than Vuzix 230 Wrap model but only slightly. The quality was lacking. My unit was the EVG260V (AV-Input NON-3D).
- SOLD THEM WITH MY VUZIX 230 WRAP BUNDLE - They are the lowest of all... Stay away... SAVE your money!

http://www.14.xylimited.com/141020703-1 ... lution.jpg

*Sharper Image WT217/Argo 3DPC Glasses HMD : These are really a mixed bag. The optics are good. The LCD is a KOPIN and has great color and contrast. The glasses are nice and compact with VGA-In/CVBS-In/Headpone Out/3D Sync Button, etc. It supports Field Seq. 3D 60Hz, Can push 72Hz. The bad thing is the brightness. The screens are kind of dim. I guess some people wont mind but Sonic cannot look like that! It has rechargable battery too.
- THEY ARE FOR SALE RIGHT NOW ON EBAY - Someone would like these but they need to be reasonable about the features that they have.

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/mKgAAOSwu ... -l1600.jpg

*I-Visor DH-4400VP (2D) : These have 800x600x3 SVGA/OSD with tons of options and settings. They have S-Video/VGA/CVBS-Inputs too. They look like wannabe Sony PLM-S700 Glasstrons! They have one problem... 30Hz max refrsh rate. They use a trick to mirror the image and flash it much slower than average 60Hz sets. They are Korean and were super expensive. I really think they could be used in parts to make a killer HMD.
- THESE ARE FOR SALE NOW ON EBAY TOO - These retailed for $500-1000. I really think these are more for a DYI and parts.

http://www.5dt.com/products/headerimages/hcyvisor.jpg

*Cy-Visor DH-4400VP (2D) : NEWER MODEL SAME AS ABOVE.
-RETURNED THEM - HAD BROKEN LCD PANEL + HEAVY USE

*Headplay PCS "OLD Model" - These sound great on paper and just look up other people's reviews. They ussually NAIL it. The problem is the optics and crappy one screen design. Ghosting on 3D content. Washed out contrast and very small exit pupil. Ashamed. It was very close to having it all :(
- RETURNED THEM - Do not miss them. I really do not recommend messing with them.

http://www.yurtopic.com/travel/tips/ima ... System.jpg

*Sony PLM-A35 : These are AMAZING. They have 38-39ish FOV. They have S-Video/CVBS. They can use a camera battery "Long Life". They have a diffuser layer that helps the pixel grid array not show spaces in between. I think this method is called the HEATHER Filter. It is called "Vapor Desposition Mirror Coat". It is a diffraction/Optical filter technique that is used in the pixel grid to eleminate the spaces in bewtween. The press release states it is NOT a blurred pixel but a processed one using sony tech. To me this sounds like Olympus's OSR Optical Super Resolution on the FMD-700. The PLM-a35 has a very low pixel count and is lower than 320x240! I will say that is seems to be doing something. The image looks like a smoother/softened version of 640x480X3 VGA because of the way it shows the pixels. Text is not readable unless you have large font and huge scaling DPI tweaks. The Glasstron Lite/PLM-A35 is really a favorite of mine and I own X2 Pairs. This model was Sony's answer to the newer light weight design Olympus Eye-Trek series. It seems to be using very good tech for something marketed as a portable LCD Monitor/TV for gaming & movies. I am really convinced theses units use a specal in house version of Olympus OSR tech just specific to Sony. These Glasses are the lightest in weight of all the Sony Glasstrons. They have really strong color and really vivid exaggerated saturation. I think it looks great for SNES games and Sonic/Mario/MAME Games. They have 4:3 Aspect and a physical brightness wheel. The Optics are the best in the industry & matched only by Olympus. You feel like it's a really big Sony TV from back in the day. I see very little motion blur. It really reminds me of some kind of CRT refresh rate. Sonic runs smooth! People do not realize the the model number of these and date released suggests the PLM-a35 were the last Glasstron made! The PLM-50/PLM-100/PLM-A55/PLM-S700 all came before it's release!
- I OWN TWO PAIRS - I reccomend these. They are right up there with the Olympus Series.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/images2/ ... outfit.jpg

*Fatshark BASE Aviator Editions : These have a massive FOV of 46 Degrees. These are meant for FPV. They can input CVBS Video and have a headphone out. The resolution is 640x480 and they use a KOPIN LCD I think. There is very fast burn in on these. It fades quickly but is there. The colors on these are OK. The contrast and brightness are good for the most part. I love these because of the HUGE FOV. Playing Wolfenstien 3D or DOOM is really neat on these. The screen is sharp but suffers from the coner being blurry from the optics. Truth is the 46 FOV is really large and the lens do a good job. These just need to be improved with better design and more effective lens type. The have a really compact design and no breakout box. The little knob controls all settings from Brightness/Contrast/Color Saturation. The CVBS signal is suprisingly stable and has zero to little artifacts and fringing. All the colors are decent too.
- I KEPT THEM - I think they are good if you can snag some for under $100. I mean 46 FOV is insane! The lens are the only slight weakness of the unit.

http://www.hooked-on-rc-airplanes.com/i ... oggles.jpg

*Sony PLM-S700 : These are amazing. I mean I dont need to say anymore than that. I have some dust in on my screens and or lens I need to clean out... BUT! These still are just top dogs! SVGA 800x600x3/S-Video/CVBS/VGA Inputs. See through AR Visor. Built-In Cooling fan. Full OSD Controls/Settings. Super Comfortable. Sharp vivid image. Colors look great. The S-Video/CVBS scales down the image FOV sadly. I will say these are great in VGA mode. the FOV in VGA mode is 39-40ish Just like the PLM-A35 Models I own. No 3D Support and I cannot find someone to hack mine with a RM-95 Sony Camcorder Firmware Programer & Commander Remote. If you change the internal programing of the PLM-S700 it can become a 3D Model LDI-100B 3D Model! Same hardware! I dont have any issues with it. I always convert my S-Video/CVBS devices to VGA with a converter for the full FOV of 39ish. I need to clean mine and get that dust off the lcds and or lens/mirrors. any help or tips on that guys?

PS - Can anyone help me mod mine? The tools and resources seems kinda rare to find now :'(

http://img0.pconline.com.cn/pconline/11 ... _thumb.jpg

*Olympus FMD-250W : These are the last model they ever made to my account. These are the update to the Eyetrek FMD-150W model. These have a lighter control unit, 3D SRS Sound processor, newer optics designs/lcd models/revisions, etc. These are my favorite and I cannot beleive I found them on ebay for $150. The optics are amazing and the 16:9 aspect is just great. They can switch to 4:3 too. The colors are great, the brightness is even and very clear. the contrast is really advanced for the time. The OSD Settings are good too. The FMD-250W lost some features however. The sharpness setting has been removed and been relplaced with a balanced preset of soft/detailed sharpness. The Cinema-Zoom & other aspect modes are gone too. I never use these as most people dont either I am sure. The color & hue adjustments are there but the R/B Contrast temp controls are gone too. These things are not a big deal on a PC as you can tweak the GPU to change all things in color and appearence. You can even get some scalers with OSD and adjustments to add those things missing like cooler/warmer colors & better sharpness controls. I still want a FMD-150W to compare :p These can support CVBS & S-Video through a very delicate cable that I have modded to NEVER break ever. The S-Video quality is I SWEAR to you guys like RGB/VGA on some hmds. The screen is just huge. The SRS sound is really great too. It really is 3D with extra controls Bass/Treble etc. Playing newer widescreen retro games feels great! like the Sonic 1 and 2 HD ports on my Nvidia Shield! Outrun with normal scaling looks great too. Older games look and feel great on this. And the FOV is 44. yep. HUGE!
- KEPT IT AND LOVE IT - If you see one grab it. It really is worth the effort. The Avegant Glyph has same FOV! These are like an older 16:9 SDTV!

http://www.olympus-global.com/en/news/2 ... 50e_02.jpg

*EVG920V(Video Version) : These are like the EVG260/IVG260 Model but with 922K 640x480X3 Resolution. They come with a remote that "Minie" did not work. Changed batteries 8 times. Guess it's broken? lol. These are used by FPV as cheaper Fatshark alts. I found the LCDs to be good and very decent matching the other 922K hmds. I think the main reason I returned mine was the optics. They were blurry and motion blurry seemed bad too. Burn in was also there too. The FOV was 32-35. I guess they are OK. I just think older and better quality items destroy it. Glasstrons,Olympus, etc.
- I RETURNED IT - I got mine for $60 but even at that I wasn't going to use it. I say you can find better now.

http://i01.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/2012 ... unning.jpg

*eMagin Z800 - The old school holy grail! I guess I am snoby lol. I found the optics to be blurry and not the best focused. I found the screen to have some sort of grainy effect and the colors to be too warm to my liking. No OSD and the damn thing is picky about working. It uses older software and drivers too. The headtracker will not work on winx64 systems. The FOV was around 40 degrees I suppose but I felt it waas smaller. It was to me about same as Headplay PCS. I saw the potential and appeal for it, I just cannot EMAGIN "haha" get it? :p someone paying +$1000 for this thing. It was probably cool back in the day but now its just too old to work right. I found it to be underwhelming. I had the super expensive commerical headmount "rugged version". I honestly think the Glasstrons offer better FOV and quality. eMagin uses OLED displays that are known to devolop spots and fade over time.
- JUST SOLD MINE - It will not be missed. I am very dissapointed in it. :(

http://www.emagin.com/wp-content/upload ... side21.jpg

*Virtual Realities VR Visor (Oriscape GVD-310-3D) : This thing was OK. It has Field Seq 3D @60Hz/Nvidia Support "Older". It was SVGA/VGA "800x600".
I think my model was in the wrong box. It said 3D/SVGA. I felt my unit was VGA not SVGA. The optics were... GOOD! suprised? I was. The colors were good too! The image was clean! It was really neat... BUT! The right lcd panel would fade too grey after getting too hot and image would just suffer. The control unit was big and got warm too. It had VGA in/out + CVBS/S-Video Inputs too. It had good design and a style like the PLM-S700/I-Visor. The main thing I did not like about it... Even if my unit had been working correctly... Was the FOV being 28. That is just too small for me. :(
- RETURNED IT - I got my unit for $150. I thought I had a really great deal. You should just look for better options.

http://www.e-monz.jp/gazou/pc/GVD-3d_top2.jpg

*Vuzix 1200DX HDMI Version : Well it's smaller than most but bigger than the pics have you think. The unit has lots of features but I wont even talk about them... Why? simple the...OPTICS SUCK! Contrast was uneven too. The design is opposite from any vuzix product I have owned and these just suck. I couldnt even use them or get them to look usable. the FOV was decent 30ish maybe 32/35. The features are nice too... It just reminds me of Headplay, so much potential and failed. I recommend trying all 854x480 3D HDMI Video glasses and find the ones that have GOOD optics! NOT Accupix or Vuzix 1200 models! You may have to try alot of crappy unkown China brands... BUT! I found some! They are just beautiful and great!
- NEEDLESS TO SAY, I RETURNED THEM - Stay away from these... Clunky and just a poor excuse for a hmd failure!

http://prohardver.hu/dl/cnt/2013-11/103 ... 1200dx.jpg

*Nebula HDMI 3D Video Glasses (Generic China Brand) : These are the wierd white video glasses that look very thin & narrow compared to most hmds. These are the glasses that have missing parts and a slot for a sd card reader with only an empty space! These glasses have power switch that slides up and down and does NOTHING! These glasses have 3 buttons on each arm that are completely useless! These glasses have a port for a usb type of charger plug but instead there is another empty slot with missing parts! These glasses have arms that move and tilt up and down for perfect image angle! These glasses have label that says MIC for microphone input?! BUT! The port is a hole missing the microphone jack! BUT! These glasses have a really small exit pupil and the arms make it so hard to focus and get close enough to the lens area! These glasses have the wiring wedged right inside the hinges of the arms so each time you adjust them it saws/cuts away into the wires slowly killing your $400-500 hmd... These units can have dead pixels! YEP... These models may have a dead pixel or two... To be fair that can happen with any microdisplay... So... Yep... Drumroll... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

BUT! These glasses are amzing... I kid you not guys... It has a matchbox sized HDMI 1.4 controller chip! The LCD panels are 854x480... Colors are deep and look perfect, Optics are really close to perfect for what I have seen, the coners can look a little blurry but I modded mine now its "Crystal" and I DONT MEAN "Myvue" haha sorry I couldnt resist! The lenses are really decent and the small exit pupil seems to not cause any issues IF you can get super close to them. The video quality is 720p @60Hz and the 3D is SBS 60Hz. The detail in the picture is just great. The 3D looks like a mini projector and I really love it! They are super portable and do not have any sort of breakout box! The cable is connected to the glasses with a little adjuster switch that enables 3D mode and adjusts GAMMA/CONTRAST/BRIGHTNESS. Those are the only options and they work great. Color looks amazing and the sharpness/softness ratio is just spot on. The FOV is around 32-35 same as Vuzix 1200/Accupix Mybud. I tried a Trdef FAKE 3D Android version of Dead Trigger and the 3D effect was really damn good. These are super portable and the only thing I dont like about them is they dont have a FOV of 35+. I really think these are the only 854X480x3 Glasses/hmd to own. The optics and LCD Panels are just something uncommon in todays hmd/video glasses market. I modded mine and fixed all the cosmetic and design issues, It is clear that they used the old parts from the IVG260/EVG260 Lower end hmd model. The whole shell is the same. That explains the buttons that dont work and the sd card slot that is not installed or functional. Mod it and fix yours. Then you will love it. Great LCDS/Optics
- KEEPING THEM & MODDED THEM INTO A VISOR W/FOAM VELCRO - These are great if you can get them for $250 or less. I got mine used for $85.

"These are the BEST VR/Virtual Big Screens I have found"

- Google Cardboard VR 2.0 (UltraOptix DK1 LENSES) - Has real potential but cannot compare to the Olculus Virtual Desktop "Virtual Home Theater Screen"
- Oculus DK1 - Great unit and I think it's PERFECT for older games at lower RES like VGA 640x480. Doom/Hexen/Sonic/Mario SCALE really good!
- Oculus DK2 - Just got one off eBay for $300... Ill let you know when I mess with it... Cannot see why they are selling for $1000+ now?!

Well thats it. I think I only have 1 or 2 more hmds/video glasses to try and I will be done for good. I mean I cannot have room for all these. So glad I didnt keep all the ones I have tried. It gets stupid expensive and frustrating doing this. Hope my efforts here will help you guys. happy hunting! :)

Hey hey. Welcome my friend. I've gone through many of those HMDs myself (though thankfully not that many). Currently just using the DK2 for VR development, and an Nvidia 3D Vision 2 monitor for general gaming (27" 1440p). I also have an Optoma 720p 3D projector that I was using for movie watching, but I honestly don't watch movies that much compared to gaming. Cheers, feel free to stick around.

Thanks my friend! Do forgive my spelling errors as I type way faster than my brain can keep up. I hope to keep these older HMDs in the community interest. Oculus gets all the love but these are really neat relics. Eyetreks and Glasstrons are peices of art in my opinion. I have to say it's like owning portable SDTV sets that dont weigh the size of CRTs! I just got my DK2 and will be messing with it sortly. I also want to thank you for your FREE 3D driver hosted here. I have not looked into it as I have been gutting HMDs and selling some gear. I will try it and I have read all about it's stability and well thoughtout design. VorpX seems a little eh. I heard the price went up and the customer service would not refund people that did not like the driver. I think the DK2 may be the VR unit I keep and use for awhile. I love Palmer but I am worried about all support dropping on the user created DK stuff/mods/games/free stuff. The CV1 might just be a big XBOX live store in the shape of "Oculus Home". I love the developers and the free stuff that people make for passion NOT money. Donations are always cool though. People need to be given appreciation for the work they do for others... NOT get rich! Still... I am proud of Mr. Palmer. He really did make a hell of a design on these Oculus Rifts. I just dont like paying for software. I like paying for cold hard metal geal. I want something tangible and not in "thin air" like software lol. I hope to meet some cool people here and possibly trade some stuff with others that may be interested too. It's a neat place. I have some questions too if I may?

I really want to meet a trustworthy dude that has a Sony RM95 and EPROM board debugger cables. This guy in Europe hacked his PLM-S700 to the LDI 3D Model just with EPROM and a RM-95 Remote.

How the devil can I clean microcontroller lcd screens/lenses in HMDs without getting dust and MORE dust in them?

BTW - Very nice gear you have. Good and effective. I need to downsize all my various random bits of 3D tech. I mean what on earth am i going to do with a 3D Video Wizard and Colorcode 3D mode content?! I have a DLP 144Hz Frampacking/TB/SBS solution! How is the Lightboost on that monitor? I heard it's good tech. I made the mistake of assuming a 120Hz Projector would be as smooth as LG's Trumotion Interpolation! Ha! I was wrong still blurry! My Plasma is the closest thing I got to non-blur CRT kinds of performance!

Yeah, I was a pack-rat for a while and, well, I still like buying random gadgets but I kind of dialed it back a bit. It's fun, but I'd rather get stuff I'm actually going to use.

The Lightboost is nice, very bright image and crystal clear. Ghosting on the Asus Rog Swift is low. Still there but barely noticeable in normal scenes.

The refresh rate alone won't eliminate blur (until it's extremely high). TruMotion and all that stuff is usually just black frame insertion. Same concept as low persistence on the DK2. If you have a 120Hz display, you could probably use certain 3rd party video players to add in the interpolation, or black frames, but I haven't explored this much myself (though I should try it when I get a chance).

Yeah SVP. Smooth Video Project. It's good but I found no way to make games use it haha. That would be great! 30hz and convert it to 60hz "fake". I thinks its cool to see that kind of stuff. Tricking programs into running fast on lower hardware would mean great things for Cherry Trail mobile cpus etc. Interpolation can be used like this and the super fast CPUs of today should have ZERO input lag.
