Buying Mobile for VR

Post by Dilip »

Enter the teaser Jhon Carmack......

https://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/statu ... 9374490624

Does this mean there is VR Specific Phone about to launch.. How different it would be from phone that is for calling??

Inevitable launch of Gear VR Consumer edition is on horizon, its significant that Samculus/Ocusung have now ditched Galaxies all to gather
in favor of developing some phone that is for VR primarily, everything else secondary..

Since Samsung is only producer for Gear VR wasn't Note4 actually phone for VR? If no why not? Cause it was heating up a lot had
sensor calibration jumpiness problem? What about Galaxy S6? Why it was not Phone for VR? FoV & Still heating up problem?

Does this mean NOTE5 is not a Phone for VR? What is going to be subtracted or added to note5 to make it phone for VR? Will it
appeal now to those who still want Note with calling and other MM functions?

Is it caution for those who are naively about to buy note5 thinking they could enjoy Gear VR C1 with it when it will be out?

Many questions.......Answer is just month away..

Here are my best assumptions.....of secret sausages about to be raveled.

1) Miraculous Cooling solutions with heat vents and active fan inside the phone itself that activate on connecting external power only (i sliped out  ) ;)
2) More Juicy battery...
3) More deeper access to display controller in Exynos Chip thus killer low latency. (I expect Custom VR SoC  )
4) Ditching Android all to gather and get this all on TIZEN. ( Very Less Likely considering hardcore truths under the sun)
5) More than 1 point to charge the phone while in VR (Headset on Face...Power bank in pocket scenario. )
6) Some way to reduce pixel visibility while in VR built in phone display, which also don't kill normal use vivid visibility scenario.

Nothing much can be on board a phone than what is currently there on Note4/5.
(Unless Samsung pack Tegra K1 GPU equivalent SoC ...Rarest of rare)

May be its just NEW SD CARD SLOT WITH 128 GB support........ ;) ( Memory card slot is absent in note5 :!: )

Here Few Wild Card Speculation in light of new development in mobile space

1) Samsung Mobile for VR will Sport 4K display
Sony recently unveiled XPERIA Z5 PREMIUM sporting 4K display.. If Sony can why Samsung can't So its very likely
Beside 4K display also support backward compatibility by displaying 1 Pixel data laid on 4 Pixel thus supporting FHD aka 1080p thus its very very likely to be used in VR.
XPZ5P do work this way...http://www.phonearena.com/news/Benchmar ... ly_id73536

2) Samsung will have its own new exclusive SoC for this Mobile for VR thing
http://www.gsmarena.com/a_samsung_exyno ... -13925.php
I suspect that 4GB memory barring LUCKY-LTE device is one which may unveiled as Gear VR Consumer Versions work sausage. Though GSM Arena Narrated whole together different theory for
LUCKY LTE code name, imho its more about Palmer Luckey LTE. Moreover scoring multi-core little lower to Exynos 7420 also clocked at 1.38 vs 2.30 Ghz *Beat the Heat by lowering clock* can also
make device little cheap ( just wild card guess.. you cant actually i know, but i dare)

I am eagerly waiting for OCulus Connect out come..

Will post here ...what turn out to be true..
Which i think will not matter as this thread is pretty ...Image Silent

Theory One :: Mobile for VR = Lucky LTE = GALAXY S7 ??

Theory Two :: Galaxy S7 Depth Camera For Gear VR positional tracking (Inspiration from Project Tango* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe10ExwzCqk)

http://www.in.techradar.com/news/phone- ... 935282.cms

"5.7-inches (a big jump from the 5.1-inch Galaxy S6), partly in response to the success of the Galaxy Note 5."
# IMO It has much to do with Larger FOV in VR possible at 5.7" (FoV of Gear VR DK1 was more praised over that of GVRDK2 which has almost same optics but different screen size)

I'm waiting for someone to figure out that you could put a camera on both ends of a phone and not only could you take 3D photos of moving subjects, but you could take 3D video as well. Maybe apps could also create 3D models from a stereoscopic video.

In past there were such phones...

1 LG Optimus 3d Max P720.
http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_3d_max_p720-4562.php
2 HTC Evo 3d.
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_evo_3d-3901.php

They had twin camera on back on vertical stripe at distance of average human ipd for taking Stereo 3D pics and videos.

Sadly these devices failed as by then there was no VR in mobile space, also they were depth shooting phones.

What you want is depth tracking phones.
That technology involves lot of advance sensors and processing power which is very new.
Google the ''Project TANGO'' its all about depth tracking in real time for using in app, by means of what you desired.(on fly)

Apparently MOBILE FOR VR has been halted for some reasons.

Instead GVR now support all 4 flagship thus different fov at different sizes for same resolution
or may be fov of smallest of all phones as Ipd and display cups has fixed size...its bad idea imo.
what's benefit in vr for buying more expensive note5 over s6 when additional size just got wasted.

Good move to make GVR half the price $99 after removing that plastic from over head band
immediate benifit are reduction in price as one less component, reduction in weight. More pocket friendly
End size.
