eMagin Developing Next Generation Head Mounted Display

Post by budda »

Hi,

I don't know how this one crept under the radar, but it looks like emagin will be back with a new 3D visor 10 years after it released the VGA Z800 model.

More details will be forthcoming during 2015.

See the company information here: http://ir.emagin.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96 ... ID=1988372

This first product will target the high-end gaming market.

The OLED microdisplay is the fundamental reason that the IHMD is half the weight and size of its VR HMD counter parts.

The first prototype is expected to be completed at the end of 2014 and will have a resolution of 4MP/eye, nearly 4 times that of other VR HMDs

Thanks.

I saw this, but 2014 is gone and there has been no news (outside this press release).

Would be interesting to have a real competitor to the Rift, though, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I find it interesting that I had to learn about this at niels mtbs3d, and i had all kinds of emagin stuff back in the day, and other people at other sites think they are cutting edge VR news. Sometimes you have to get back to your roots (here) to get the sense of innovation and community that makes magic happen? Reminds me of an old british scifi show, blakes7, episode - the way back. They tried to get him to forget his roots, but he knew he had to get back to the place he was once before! ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXDd1zO ... 6k&index=1

Hi,

I think this time around, emagin will be a bit smarter about how they approach virtual reality gaming.

Back in the z800 days we were all so optimistic that 3D was just around the corner (as always) and that success would just be about getting a few big players to jump aboard and all will be well. Things all round have been a lot harder than that.

Naively, one would have thought the computer, visor and gaming companies would all cooperate to standardise the industry so progress could be made. Its actually taken disruptive outsiders like Facebook, Palmer and the amazing growth of Smart Phones to bust open the field.

As for emagin, they now have commercial experience as a supplier to demanding high end customers. They don't particularly need gaming to survive. Their technology has matured greatly and I am sure they are a bit more realistic about their prospects in head mounted visors. They can sit back and watch others do the hard yards and jump in when they are ready.

It will be interesting to see what emagin will do. They will not be able to pass off launching a mediocre product.

Thanks.

Thanks budda. I have used jamie kellys vrcade system, sulon, valves system, and been over to kamal siegel digital double motion capture studio some too. Some I cant talk about. No way jose that any of these solutions take off without vestibular mismatch issues solved and stopping the puke fest on first time users and new public players. vr for the common man. when geekmaster says someone is genius, http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.p ... os#p136015 like okreylos - doc ok, I take note. Think kinect, MSFT, minecraft VR - LOL! Image Even palmer says minecraft is PREMIERE title for VR, how did they let that slip to MSFT and thier VR/AR strategies will be one of the great clusterfuggs to remember in iribes career.

Emagin just released their 4th quarter results for 2014 and some updates on their developments.

http://ir.emagin.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96 ... ID=2025389
Recent Corporate Highlights

......

• Development continued in Q4 on the Company’s Immersive Head Mounted Display (“IHMD”) headset. This IHMD incorporates eMagin’s latest high-resolution OLED microdisplays and patented optics and enables a paradigm shift in the look, performance, weight, and size of Virtual Reality (“VR”) HMDs. The OLED microdisplay is the fundamental reason that eMagin’s IHMD is half the weight and size of its VR HMD counter parts. The field of view (“FOV”) of the IHMD exceeds one hundred degrees and can have resolutions ranging from one megapixel per eye (“MP/eye”) to four MP/eye. Demos of the prototype headset are occurring in Q1 2015.

.......
Looks like Emagin believe they have an Oculus Rift killer - unless Oculus is not telling us something.

Thanks.

Hi,

It looks like eMagin is getting serious about its forthcoming HMD's.

This business announcement was made by eMagin yesterday.

http://ir.emagin.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96 ... ID=2035276
Apr. 15, 2015-- eMagin Corporation (NYSE MKT: EMAN) hired Dan Cui as Vice President of Business Development for its HMD “head-mounted display” group. eMagin has developed multiple HMDs for both military and consumer uses including the Z-800 gaming headset ..... Currently, eMagin is completing a new, highly innovative, next generation HMD prototype with high 2,000 by 2,000 pixel resolution and a large +100 degree field of view which features OLED microdisplays offering multiple advantages over LCD or LCOS microdisplays

Thanks.

Emagin have announced progress in the development of their advanced HMD 'head mounted display' prototype.
... although we encountered a delay during the quarter, our new, advanced HMD 'head mounted display' prototype was recently completed. The headset features 2,000 by 2,000 pixel resolution, a superior form factor, a wide 100+ degree field of view and has all the outstanding advantages of eMagin OLED microdisplays. We are currently demonstrating the headset to potential partners and customers.”

Although its more of the same news as before, it will be interesting to see what is really looks like.

https://twitter.com/dcuinh/status/598941986582822912

2K X 2K 80 Degree FOV

2K×2K resolution microdisplays (square shaped)
80 degree horizontal and vertical FOV (~100 diagonal)
‘flip-up’ design
adjustable IPD and diopter settings
electronics integrated into wearable ‘puck’

Amazing Looking...Kind of GEEKISH but who cares if works as promised.
