Besides, a 3D monitor is not portable, nor does it have any headtracking. well i have read that 3D using 3D vision is the best with high end alienware laptops with 3D screens - or you can ise BIG 3D vision enabled monitors for more immersion , people are using head tracker as well - z800 cannot even come in close [read reviews on amazon usa abt z800 there are horror stories galore] - need i say much ! HTPCs like asrock ion 3D are not meant for gaming at all....they are made for streaming movies to big screen...that's it WiredEarp wrote: Looks like that might be the only way, you used to be able to buy it direct from their website, but looks like you cant even buy the Z800 itself that way anymore. you can buy it from vrealities for usd$1649 + shipping....but who cares...i'd say z800 for usd$600-700 is great to have , anything higher than that z800 not worth that much better options galore! if i were to invest usd$1000+ i'd opt for sony anytime over z800....without a wink

Head tracking with a laptop screen is very, very different than head tracking with an HMD. Not even close, realism wise.

Yeah i'd LOVE a high res, high FOV (>120 degree) HMD.
I have 3D Vision @ 1080, and Z800 @ 800x600. I am quite surprised at how clear things are in 800x600 in Skyrim. Very clear, even with text and stuff like that. I haven't tried Black Shark yet - I think its in applications like this (sims) that you can notice the benefit of higher resolution. Its mainly when you want to read the gauges etc, without having to move your head closer - the higher resolution helps here. For sims, a multi 3D monitor setup with TrackIR MAY be better for these reasons (although, the HMZ might be the best of both worlds).
For games that dont require reading stuff however (such as Left 4 Dead) then 800x600 is fine, looks great and I can see clearly enough to shoot things from quite a distance. I would happily keep 800x600 and gain greater FOV, than go to higher res with this FOV.

And if it gets down to $300, I'll buy it! ~ Haha, I wish I could find another deal like my Z800. US$200 cos it was 'broken'. IE, a cable was loose . If only it didn't have the dead pixels on one screen I'd try and get a decent price for it!

Hi there,
Awaiting the Oculus Rift, i got the old Z800 out of the closet. i'm running W7 64bit on a GTX 550 ti with the latest 310.9 drivers
When i follow your instructions WiredEarp, I don't get the 3D vision option to select a regular lcd monitor. i have to go through some wizard when i check the "Enable 3D stereo" and it appears the wizard doesn't run on the low resolution of the Z800 or something. when i pass through the wizard by setting my big monitor as the main display and then switch it to the z800 there still is no dropdown. the 3D test shows the nvidia logo moving back and forth in red and blue.
I don't have the new rom (would they still ship it?) can you confirm the rom is needed? would it help to try and find the (by now) old drivers you used and install those?
thanks for any feedback!

Hi Fragilem17
Hmm, I haven't used the Z800 for a long time due to the OLED cancer I have on one screen - do you have a 3D Vision dongle that is plugged in? The fact that you are getting red/blue suggests that your 3D in the drivers is set to 3D Vision Discover, not a generic monitor or a 3D vision monitor...
Yep, not sure about if the ROM was required, but I suspect so. I'll try and plug in my glasses tonight and sort out if it works on the latest drivers and let you know - if it does, you probably will need to buy the ROM if you want to use your Z800. Unfortunately, its about $100 (shipping is heaps, its the size of a coin but comes in a DVD size box ;\ )

I plugged in my Z800, and can confirm that it no longer works on the latest drivers with 3D Vision. F u Nvidia, once again. Its almost enough to make me buy AMD next time.
The issue seems to be that despite having the dongle plugged in and the HMD set to primary, using the generic monitor setting only shows '3D Vision Discover' analygph imagery now, not the frame switched imagery I need. So, basically it looks as though they have removed page flipped rendering from everything but the official 3D Vision monitors.
I wonder if its possible to hack 3D Vision to make it think that its turning on 3D Vision Discover, but make it turn on page flip? Also, I suspect that this problem could possibly be bypassed with a custom monitor config file, like has been done with projectors. However, I don't really care enough anymore (especially with the Rift coming) to spend any more time on it...
