It's a bit funny how HFR 3D just means 48 fps. Still, it's double 24 so I guess it makes sense, but why not at least 60? With LCD-panels having been 60 hz for ages even that is boring, bring out the 240 hz stuff already!

Most probably because of backward compatibility. Current modern cinema projectors are actually projecting 24Hz movies at 48Hz, or 144Hz for 3D movies (which is a multiple of 24, but not 60).
