Hi everyone,
It looks like Samsung is quite busy at CES 2008 introducing a new line of Plasma HDTV's to add to it's exisitng line DLP3D sets! Here are a few links:

Sure would be cool to have the folks at Unigine and MTBS work with Samsung as well as they appear to be leading the way in Consumer level 3D for the living room gamer, like IZ3D is leading the way for the LCD monitor gamers!

Cheers!

If one reads the actual Samsung press release (e.g. the yahoo link) carefully, I believe only the entry-level 4-series plasmas (which are not 1080p) support S-3D. I don't believe the 1080p 5-series models support S-3D. Bummer if one is set on an 1080p model.

I wonder what kind of S-3D algorithm these plasmas use. The DLP chips "wobulate" and the 3D checkboard algorithm is a natural fit to the DLP hardware, but not in the case of plasma.

I have searched for more info on 3D Plasma technology but haven't found anything. Both 4 and 5 series will support 3D though. Google samsung 3d plasma and check it out. It does appear the Tridef drivers (www.ddd.com) will be supporting these when they come out though.

Yes, Tridef has a press release on supporting the Samsung Plasmas. http://www.ddd.com/about/Press%20Releas ... 80108.html

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I still believe the 5-series do not support S-3D, and I believe the various reports that say otherwise are mis-informed. (e.g. the Tridef press release above mentioned 42" and 50" TVs only, which are the available sizes of the 4-series. The 5-series are 50" and 58".) Time will tell ...

Well they are 120Hz, so they might work well with shutterglasses, too. Maybe Samsung starts to like them and uses them on this product, too. It should be able to do full - Page-Flipp, though :)

The other way to go would be, to use polarized glasses - with checkerboard system. Maybe it could be done easily with it.

Interesting, i didn't notice that the first time. I guess time will tell...

Now this is a shame. Nothing like capitalizing on a little negative, and incorrect, PR eh IZ3D? I was doing a little surfing this morning and thought I would check out the latest goods on IZ3D's site. They posted a link on their webpage to a preview done at CES 2008 by the folks at TechDigest stating that IZ3D pwnes 3D Plasma. Here is a direct link to the article or you can go to IZ3D's website to see the banner ad:
http://techdigest.tv/2008/01/ces_2008_iz3d_g.html
http://www.iz3d.com

Now, I understand the need to differentiate your product and can't fault IZ3D too much for taking advantage of obvious misinformation to gain a little market share before 3D Plasma even hits the shelves, but this is another case where 3D technology reviewers don't what they are talking about. Stating that all games must be directly coded to support 3DPlasma is simply incorrect. Just like DLP3D, the folks at DDD will be making the drivers to support 3D Plasma as can be seen on their homepage.

This falls right in line with the topic on Neils Blog, however it is a real shame to see one 3D vendor slam another, leveraging the publics ignorance on how 3D works!

True!
But it is really a sad state of affairs when reviewers are more concerned with how fashionable they look when wearing 3D Glasses vs remarking on the abilities of the technology itself. How was ghosting? Any noticeable flicker? Color reproduction? Perceived resolution was good? What games are on the horizon? Who is making the drivers? etc....

Nope, none of the good stuff. Only, "these glasses make me look fat where the other ones don't".

LOL. Anyway, I sure hope someone credible actually reviews all these new solutions vs half baked impressions that are built on whether glasses make you look cool or look like a goofball. Who REALLY cares what the glasses look like! It's not like I will be wearing them to beach!!!!

What??? You won't be wearing them to the beach?! What is wrong with you? I thought you were a true stereoscopy supporter. :P

Actually I haven't even tried wearing my VR920 on the train or bus yet. But one day I will.

Yea I allways wanted to see S-3D in public 8)
Did you test your VR920 on a notebook? Or do some cables (or high power consumption) prevent it from beeing used with one?

The VR920 works on any computer that has a VGA port and a USB port. I think it uses more power when you use the VR920 (even when you try to switch the laptop screen off). Although for best results you want an nvidia 7xxx graphics card, otherwise you have to rely on Vuzix to add native support to games.

I think I read somewhere about the Z800 that it consumes less than 1watt. They had a comercial, that it can be used to increase the lifetime of a notebook battery. It might be because of the much smaller screen compared to the notebook itself, or because it was build with OLED displays.

Yes, because of the OLEDs. They don't need to be backlighted, which is the most conssuming component of a LCD display.

EDIT: in fact, they are powered through the USB, withou the need of an external power supply
