Toe-in on close-up shots looks very very bad though. Tried it.

This is for real. It was filmed to mimic the way your eyes work. So yeah, toed-in.
Since it is surely adjustable its not like he had to use it for every shot though.

I'm guessing but it's probably for simlulate the eyes natural movement in response to a scene (focus cameras on the object that the audience is suppoused to focus on). I think they need to programmed or (most probably) handled manually. That'll give a good and relaxing effect i think.
In my experience trying toe-in on homemade stereocameras gives a worse image than keeping them parallell. A slight toe-in doesn't hurt but it doesn't seem to do anything better to the image either.
