Cardboard stereoscopic, confusion

Confusion; I' m looking at old stereoscopic cardboard photographs. The distance between lenses determines depth. But is there a specific distance between the resulting photographs on cardboards? When I scan the cardboard and open up the file in stereophotomaker it usually needs a lot of interdistance correction.
Can anyone please enlighten me?
