LG Cx OLED 3D Vision Compatibility!

Post by Enzel »

It seems like the LG CX will be capable of 3D as argued in this thread thanks to the included feature Black Frame Insertion at 120 hertz

I'm very interested on this subject, I read the other thread mentioning BFI, and I also read a few days ago the LG new generation has BFI :)
I have a LG C6, but I fear the day it will die. I don't have other 3D displays.

I play in 3D for 10 years but I've always been with 3DTV (Plasma 1080p, then LED 4K, then OLED 4K) so I really don't know the "3D Vision Kit" world.

I have some questions :
1) I assume a 3D Vision Kit will be necessary, right ? (Glasses + Emitter)
2) The 3D mode would be CRT Mode ?
3) Would it be necessary to output 120 fps ? Is there "desync" if frame drops ?
4) How does it behave with the VRR ? (I guess it's not compatible with 3D enabled)
5) It would be true 4K per eye (so better than a Passive 4K 3DTV, in term of displayed resolution) ?

I have the C9 model and tried 3D Vision with it. Unfortunately had pretty much ghosting. I'm also curious if the CX can do 3D with BFI. I think chances are pretty high.

1) Yes, 3D Vision Kit is required
2) CRT mode is available by default
3) No
4) I guess you can't use both the same time. G-Sync + 3D Vision are mutually exlusive on 3D monitors at least
5) Yeah native 4K per eye but currently we must wait for Nvidia releasing new graphics cards with HDMI 2.1 port. With current graphics cards we can only output 4k@60hz as this is the maximum HDMI 2.0 can do. So we are currently stuck at 1920x1080 or 2560x1440 @120hz.

Thank you Paul for your precise answers :)

I didn't think about the HDMI limitation.
Did you try 4K120 with Chroma 4:2:0 ? Maybe this is possible ?

It is very unlikely that this works but I'll try anyway. AFAIK we do not only need HDMI 2.1 on both ends but also a HDMI 2.1 cable which is still very expensive (3-4 times more expensive than a HDMI 2.0 cable). I hope prices for the cable will drop when there are more devices available supporting hdmi 2.1.

I really hope I'm wrong but I'm not hopeful about these working well with 3d vision.
Hopefully the way the BFI works will become clearer with time, but I've seen some videos and comments that it's almost like a rolling scan than a full blanking interval, so I think crosstalk is going to be a major problem.
Maybe I'm just a natual pessimist!

This video unfortunately seems to give you the reason, you can observe it better if you play it at x0.25 speed at 8:38 minute which is motionpro (bfi) on High. :(

Tested and 60hz was still the highest I could choose for 4K.

Here is a better example slow motion video of how BFI works in the C9

Going to lurk around here as I have 48cx and glasses, but no emitter (it was part of my old monitor)

Will keep an eye on ebay and if I find a cheap one I'll purchase and test!

Might it be looking like a rolling scan because of the camera used to film ? Just guessing ...
