Using Samsung GearVR Controller in SteamVR Through Freepie

Post by Annex »

Hello, there, I am completely new to the MTBS3D forums, as well as to FreePie in general. A while ago, I purchased a cheap Chinese off-brand VR headset (Direkt Tek WVR1) and have been searching for a means of motion controller emulation for some time. Prior to this, I used a custom Leap Motion driver for controller emulation, but ultimately found this route to be more cumbersome than useful. Before I go ahead and cave in to buy a NoloVR setup or look for a used set of Razer Hydra controllers, I wanted to know if I could use FreePie to take advantage of the Samsung GearVR controller that I already own (the GearVR controller is a 3DOF controller with a trackpad, several buttons, and a trigger). I've already seen numerous solutions such as those provided by RiftCat and ALVR that emulate Vive controllers using the GearVR controller https://support.riftcat.com/hc/en-us/ar ... ith-VRidge, https://github.com/polygraphene/ALVR/bl ... /README.md However, all of these solutions are streaming based VR solutions, and depend on using a Google Cardboard or GearVR headset (whereas I want to use the WVR1 headset I already purchased as I don't have a strong enough network connection for streaming VR to be practical for me). I already downloaded ALVR's FreePie plugin and test script for the GearVR controller found here: https://github.com/polygraphene/FreePIEVRController, but still don't really know how best to go about taking input from the GearVR controller and sending it to SteamVR. From what I've seen other people do, I figure I will have to emulate Razer Hydra controllers with the GearVR controller and then use the SteamVR driver for Razer Hydra, but I'm clueless as to how to set up a FreePie script to accomplish this - can anyone help me out? Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Additionally, I understand that ultimately I'm looking to do a lot of work for very little payoff, considering that even if I get the GearVR controller working, I won't have any positional (only orientational) tracking, but I would still appreciate the ability to use a simple single motion controller in SteamVR.
